Default 'Lost in Translation' - High-Def Digest Review

Just posted Kenneth's review of 'Lost in Translation.' He loves the film itself, but was somewhat disappointed with this HD DVD release, saying that while both the video and audio have their finer points (and are definitely an improvement over the standard-def DVD), neither pack the full-bodied punch of the best high-def releases.

Just received mine today. Will try to spin it this weekend. I'm so far behind.

I'm glad the film holds up well (although not spectacularly) on HD. Somehow, though, I think if the entire film was incredibly sharp and was almost entirely '3D,' it would be out of character for the film, so I'm almost happy to hear that some of the scenes are a little soft.

I know I'm weird, but don't you think it would be somewhat jilting and detract from the overall mood of the film?

A good point and I agree with you completely. I definitely considered that and didn't want ultra sharp -- I just wanted consistent video quality on par with the Tokyo street shots.

Thanks for posting!

A correction: Matthew's Best Hit TV is not fictional. It's a real program that airs on Asahi TV from 1:20-1:50am, every Friday night

I take it that this is one of the HD-DVD exclusives? If so, this may be the one that makes me buy that HD-DVD player I've been looking for an excuse to buy This is one of my favourite movies of all time. And I agree, the DVD sucks.

Yup, it's a Universal release so it's exclusive to HD DVD. Is is one my all-time favorite films as well, and I'm so glad that it's released to HD DVD. Now if only we could convince Sony to release 'Big Fish' on HD DVD I would be a happy man.

Watched it today, ended up hating it.

Way too slow for my taste and I love The Fountain.

Pretty good looking though.

Watched this earlier today. Looked very clean and filmlike. I agree with the reviewer that there is some softness in various scenes, but it is clearly the intended effect at those times, so definitely a worthy transfer.

Ended up getting two copies from Amazon. Watched it, then made my wife watch it. I love this movie.
