Thanks for the notes explaining the differences, Tormond, I'll incorporate them in the list and add Planet Earth Japan. I'll probably leave off Blade Runner UK since the US version has everything it has (pretty much like the UK Terminator only having the the extended cut and not the theatrical as well like the French version).

Did I miss the UK 5 disc version of Planet Earth? I didn't see it listed. Awesome list btw...

It's easy to miss. I put it in post #3 after the adult titles, in a list of those releases having unique differences (either in PQ, encode, different cut, HD extras, etc.). The first 3 list only have the unique titles, and only the imports not already released in the US are listed. However PE UK is a special case, since it has an entire extra HD disc with two 50 minute long features on it. If it were released separately, then of course it would be listed, but since it's bundled with the PE set, I put it in the duplicate list. But maybe it should go in the regular list, based on that extra disc?

I'm also going to make a non-combo list of the combo titles available. In the US about 15 or so were rereleased as non combos, but most of the rest were released elsewhere as non-combos as well. So I'll make a list of those...

Also there's a few titles that have no unique differences except that they contain less material, such as The Blade Runner Tormond mentioned, and a few episodes of Star Trek: TOS season 1 released in Germany. And also those titles with significant packaging differences will get mentioned (such as the Blade Runner briefcase set).

Thanks for pointing out the location of the PE 5-Pack. I definitely missed it before

Another note... and this one requires some research: I've heard that Sahara (JP) is indeed 1.78, not 2.35 (and you mentioned this). However I've heard that we actually see MORE of the image than in the US release due to matting issues. James Cameron is notorious for this (for example). There's a page at the digital bits that explains a method of this: HERE.

Anyway not sure if this is actually the case with the Sahara (JP) release or not as I don't have a copy of each to compare. I also saw somewhere that this might be the case with U-571 (JP). Might be worth noting if somebody can confirm that this is actually the case.

Yes, both Sahara (JP) and U-571 (JP) are shown in open matte, meaning there is MORE video (at the top and bottom) than in the US versions. I watched U-571 completely and I liked the extra head room. The US version has lots of scenes where heads are cropped off at the top. Even though it's not the "correct" aspect ratio, I thought 1.78:1 made this movie look more appealing on my display (although having more viewing area probably influenced that )

I have the Japan versions of U-571 and Sahara enroute to me right now so I will get to enjoy these shortly. Will let you know my impressions (as well as the ones that Bruce just mentioned) when they get here

An AVSer pointed this title out to me, it looks legit, though probably encoded on dvd-r media. Anyway, I ordered it up, so I'll find out soon enough if it's a real HD DVD (although they are very clear that it is, so I'm optimistic).

Yea, looks like their pretty confident. I like how they price it at $19.95, .05 cents under the minimum of $20 for the 40% discount. You might as well order 2 for only $5 more.

I didn't see the coupon. Oh well, no biggie. I'm looking forward to this one because I like train docs. I have the Japanese Railway Story series and even though the narration is in Japanese, it's fun to watch and the PQ is fabulous (although I don't expect the PQ to be as good here, but at least it'll be in English).

I also discovered this listing at Tower.jp today. Link is translated using Babelfish.
A little on the Pricey side Roughly $303 before shipping.
Anyone care to be the guinea pig and place an order?

From what babelfish translates it's a 9 disc set with only 1 being HD DVD.
I had a hard time trying to find it listed anywhere else though, because of the language problems. This maybe one to ask Kannisto to look into.

Kannisto mentioned that one a while back, but I haven't put it in the list since I'm not sure if it's just an HD DVD disc of special features, or an HD copy of the movie itself (I think it probably is the movie). Anyway, it's way too pricey for me to be a guinea pig. Technically it should go on the list, but it would be nice to confirm what it contains first.

I didn't know about Tower.jp, I wonder what there pricing and selection is compared to the others? (mainly HMV, Amazon.jp and CDjapan).

HMV and Amazon.jp have it for about the same price, maybe I'd get it eventually but probably only if I know the HD DVD twin disc it comes with is the movie and not just a bunch of supplements. Kannisto gave me a link once of the complete Japanese HD DVD releases and from the translation it seemed like it was the movie. Hopefully he'll drop by to give us the link once again.

Edit: It looks like Amazon.jp has the same product description listed on the Toshiba HD DVD Japan release list. According to the Google translation, it seems the HD DVD layer does have the movie, but if so, then 120 minutes seems long for a 15gb twin disc. Perhaps the extras are on the DVD layer? (where it says 30 min.)

Not sure if this should go here but the Australian version of Harry Potter OOP is a single disc with the special features in 1080I or 1080P. It looks like it might be the same as the English one except only one disc.
