Thumbs up 'The Mummy' -- High-Def Digest review

Lots of 'Mummy' fun tonight:

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/mummy1999.html

This one holds up quite well. A few inconsistencies with the transfer, and no Dolby TrueHD track. And I continue to be amazed at how many extras Universal can stuff on a single HD DVD. Hope 'Mummy Returns' looks as good.

Definitely worth a look for 'Mummy' fans.
And that would be me....

Great to see the review, although I might have bought it anyway, since this is one of my favorite fun movies. Unlike Peter, I liked the fact that this one was more action/adventure than horror. I never upgraded from my VHS copy, so I think this HD-DVD will bring back some memories of how much fun I had seeing this one in the theater.

Shame about no Dolby TrueHD track. However, I also had stuck my VHS copy so will likely go for this, I'm a big fan of the series which is a lot of fun!

This is one of the wifes favorites. I would have to buy it one way or the other. I heard that it was a bit dirty in the print but others have said that it is fine. I guess I will find out. Aparently the opening shot with the sun is dirty which kind of ruins the effect. Anyone comment on that part ?

I am still surprised that the studios are not offering up the Dolby True on these type of releases.

Just happy that Harry Potter (UK) came with one....

I just watched this, though not my favorite movie I always found it fun and really enjoyed watching it in HD. I found the picture quality to be excellent and really brought it alive again.

I had not been planning to buy "The Scorpion King", but after seeing the quality of the transfer here, I have decided to get all three - so I just put in my order for that

Not that I know of, "The Scorpion King" is being released on Dec. 19th and "The Mummy Returns" is being released in January (I had already preordered that one before, along with "The Sting").

Fair enough - hopefully they will do at some stage then (maybe like the Mission Impossible box set?) I have only seen the first two films anyway. The Rock in the third film put me off it - was it any good?

Not that great, which is why I was originally not going to get this one. But it is part of the whole when it comes to the Mummy series (though "The Scorpion King" is just a prequel to one character in "The Mummy Returns"). However, I like Swords and Sorcery movies and there are much of those available for HD DVD (I did get Excalibur, but that is different).

Aha, that’s what I thought. Will stick to the first two then, both which were great fun!

Thumbs down One of Universals worst

I have to start out my review by saying that I really like "the mummy", its one of my all time fav's.

Unfortunately the video transfer on this HD-DVD is really a disappointment on all fronts. Even the really good scenes that show that HD quality window effect if you will are dirty, univeral did not clean this movie up in anyway shape or form, its really sad being that I just saw Dune the other night and that looked "immaculate!" and that is a movie that is much much older.

I wish I could be forgiving about this half done transfer but I can't especially since seeing what a fully restored movie like Dune can look like on HD-DVD..... No excuse this one is worth buying if you just have to own it, if not save your money for a future special HD-DVD edition.
