Default 'Smokin Aces' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'Smokin Aces' is up, and it's an unusual one. He gives the film itself a 2 star rating (out of 5), and yet this HD DVD release earns such high scores for video, audio and supplements (including extra credit for an HD DVD exclusive PIP commentary) that the disc's overall star rating raises it to what's usually "recommend" status.

Peter must of read my mind. When I first saw it, I thought it was a bad Pulp Fiction rip-off too. Who cares about the action when you don't care about the characters or dialog or plot?

The movie side would be a matter of taste. The movie was character heavy, in that with the ensemble cast, a character would come on, make a big impression and we'd move on pretty fast. Empathy was reserved for very few characters but the story was to decentralized to really feel for them, unlike Ocean's 11 where Clooney was the center. Overall it was a very decent action movie with a hint of drama.

This movie was deffinatley a hit or miss the movie was absolutly great until the end. Some people are to empathatic on the ending of movies. So if your huge on the ends of your films i would say dont buy. But if you come to the realization that hey it had to end someway and they did what they could, then you probabley will like this movie. I'd say at least a three star flick

I havent decided whether to get this or not. I guess I want to make sure that the disk accually plays first. Quality control problems have really given me pause lately.

Wow 2 stars? I think this was an exciting movie. This is probably a younger person type movie. I enjoyed it, and to my great suprise my girlfriend (which hates action movies) and my sister( who also hates action movies) really liked it. Perhaps it's becuase we are all between 23-27 yrs old. I buy more movies for my PS3 but I peordered this one on amazon as soon it was put on for HD-dvd. They should include fun factor for the Movie itselfbecause when i watched this movie I left the theater feeling pumped and laughing, while when I watched Pursuit of happiness, which had a better story and recieved a Recommended rating, I sort of felt depressed and out of the mood for anything(if you know what I mean). Oh well that part of the review is 100% opinon so it does really matter until you watch and decide for yourself, but in my opinon it was fun and worth my money.

The pursuit of Happiness is supposed to make you feel better at the end of the movie, like if that guy can succeed, then so can I.

I watched the Smokin' Aces last night and thought that it was fun for a while and the the characters were interesting, the tremors, but the wrong people were let go and the ending monolugue to tie everything together was forced. I wouldn't consider it in the same league as Pulp, this was more of a slick action movie where we need to just enjoy the visuals.

I wasn't happy about the ending when I walked out even though I loved the movie. But I realized, if the ending can get me as worked up as it did, it did something more than any movie I had seen in a long time (until COM, fantastic). I bought it for sure, have yet to seen it in HD but sounds like I won't be let down.

Completely agree with the review. Total mess of a movie.
The thing that really confused me with the ending. They have all this tongue-in-cheek violence with general indifference to all the characters.. then there is a sudden expectation that you should be caring about some of the characters. Like "Carnahan says... have an emotion.... wait for it....Now".
Really weird.
I thought the film was like a Carry On film. "Carry on Killing"..
or 'Rat Race' meets 'Lethal Weapon 2'
