Thumbs up 'Superman II' -- High-Def Digest review

Just finished 'Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut' review:

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/supermanii.html

The good news: it's really strong disc, with a much better transfer than I expected. The soundtrack and extras are good, too. The bad news: I still didn't love the film. It has a lot of problems, even in Donner's version.

But it is fantastic to finally get to see it, so diehard Superman fans won't be disapointed to own this one.

Thanks for the great review, Peter, I am looking forward to the copy I ordered from Amazon (along with the other 2 Superman movies).

My favorite out of all the Superman films, including Superman Returns. Glad to hear it made a good transfer on HD.

Good review Peter. I also loved # 2 and brings back some great childhood memories.

Does anyone know whether a Superman boxset is coming to HD-DVD, like it is for DVD?

Really interesting review Peter. Unlike some people I was really disappointed in this sequel...my daughters who always thought it was great. I have this HD-DVD on pre-order and pray that this reworking will help me like it a little bit more.

Hey, I think you're wrong about the movie itself. I've watched it twice and it's quite brilliant. How could you be bored to tears from the edits between Clark/Lois, Luthor, and the Villains? I thought it was all very tight, tension was built, and the payoff was amazing. The best two back to back scenes in the entire Superman saga are the depowering scene leading into the whitehouse takeover. So well crafted! Lester's version can't touch it.

I agree this is the best version of Superman II I have ever seen. The Donner version beats the Lester version hands down. All of the cheesy and humorless Lester portions have been removed and Donner scenes with emotional punch have been added. All of these changes have elevated this film from the 'painful to watch' to the 'this movie is a joy to watch' category.

But why Mr Thau didn't create villains rule the world scene?
that scene, never filmed easy to re-create today with CGI technology, what you think? Mr Thau please, create in CGI villains rule the world scene!

I think I would of loved to seen Donner's Version if he had been able to finish it back in the late 70's. but we get an idea of waht would been. I thik I like part one best but Donner's version would have been a lot like the first. I think the original version was way too cheazy.

I know all 3 taht have been released look quite good and are better looking then their DVD.

Now they just need to release the other moveis including the other version of this. I think Donner's version would of been more of an epic, just like part one was.
