Default 'School for Scoundrels' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'School for Scoundrels' is up. He felt the marketing was a bit misleading for this one, promising a crass over-the-top comedy, when in fact it ended up being a kind of lame syrupy sweet love story. But on the bright side, this is a fine HD DVD effort from the Weinstein Co, with a nice transfer, soundtrack and supplemental package.

About what I expected, that's why it's on Netflix and not on Pre-Order.

Did you see The Human Stain? Now that would be a Jacinda Barrett blind buy. Of course, it's not on hi-def though.

Surprised Peter didn't mark the video down more for the poor quality of the print in places. Try watching it about an hour in and every few seconds there's a new bit of dirt, a speckle, a hair or some other grunge that appears.

For a film this recent it's pretty scandalous the master they used for the transfer has so much visible damage.

I usually agree completely with Peter's marks for the video quality, but I think he over-rated this one. Four marks is too high when they haven't bothered to clean the print up a bit and get rid of the grunge.

Oh and another glitch: When the movie finished I decided to listen to the commentray track, so I tried to start the movie again with no luck. When I select "PLAY MOVIE" in the main menu, the screen goes black for a few seconds, then goes back to the main menu. BOOOOH!

A dissapointing transfer. As Peter notes, digital enhancement is frequently used giving an artificial look to the film in many scenes. Banding is noticed in a couple of the fade-ins. A mediocre MPEG4 transfer.

I have the unrated HD DVD and the back of the box states 107 minutes.

So, the review lists the wrong runtime. Why are you so mad!?
