Thumbs up 'Forbidden Planet' -- High-Def Digest review

Checked out 'Forbidden Planet' tonight. Warner is putting out two versions:

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/forbiddenplanet.html
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/forbiddenplanet_uce.html

The discs are the same, but the Collector's Set has the extra collectibles, etc. In any case, both are great -- another excellent Warner remaster and tons of extras.

I'm so glad that this turned out alright. I already have the Ultimate Edition on pre-order at Amazon!

Quick question Peter - did you get a chance to see the DVD release? I was just wondering how they compare?

I also await Amazon to ship my Ultimate Edition.

I also have a question. Is the standalone HD version case w/ disk inside the tin so that the standard red HD case can sit with the other disks I own ? I want to display the tin elsewhere. I hope that question makes sence.

That's what it looks like. It seems to me that everything is going to be inside the tin... so you should be golden.

I just switched my order because a couple of advance reviews of the Ultimate Edition that appeared at the end of last week were pretty scathing about how much of a "rip off" the Ultimate Collector's Edition was, with complaints that the Robbie figure was very small, very cheap and rather nasty.

Now beginning to wonder if I did the right thing because today a couple of reviews have appeared saying the opposite - praising the Ultimate extra's and saying how finely detailed the Robbie figure is.

Very confusing!

I went back and forth about it and what I came up with was that I wanted the Robbie and I wanted the poster. I plan on getting it a nice frame and putting it up in my HT.

It was only $ 42 at Amazon, I wasnt going to bite at $ 60.

I heard conflicting reports too but in the end I just went for it. Checked my email this morning and Amazon have shipped it, however it says that I won't get it until 13th Dec.

My collector's edition just came in. The Robby isn't too bad. He's painted a nice metallic charcoal color with quite nice detail. His arms are ball joints, and his waist twists. It reminds me of one my shop used to carry from Bandai that retailed for about $7. The lobby cards are great...but in the end, they're just going to collect dust somewhere. The tin is a beautiful metallic red with an embossed cover...overall my favorite part of the collection (except for the disc).

Sounds great JamesS! I too am a sucker for tins!

Is Robby made of plastic or metal, I know you've said he is painted a metallic colour but just wondered whether Robby is actually metal!

So the disk has its own red case inside of the tin yes ? So I can put it on my shelf with the other movies without the big tin ?

Yeppers. It comes with the regular retail box still shrink wrapped with the little red "For use only with HD DVD players and drives" sticker.

Very cool. This is what I had hoped. So how does the movie poster thing work ? Something about sending away for it ? I want to get a nice frame and keep this one taken care of.

There's a flyer in the packet of lobby cards. $3.25, a copy of the sales receipt with the item circled and a UPC tab from the package gets you a 27"x40" poster. Thankfully, there's a cardboard sleeve that covers the box....it has the UPC's on it so we won't have to tear up the DVD packaging. I really hope they send it rolled.

Oh well, can't complain for the price I suppose!

I just wish us people in Europe could go for the poster though, the same thing with the King Kong (1933) tin released last year.
