Default 'Army of Darkness/Unleashed' -- Universal Drops the Combos

Interesting bit of news:

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...d_Reissues/553

What do you guys think? Personally, I don't quite understand the combo concept -- if you're buying the HD DVD, what do you need a DVD version for?

And lower prices are always good...

Is this a typo in the article?

"Specs and features remain the same -- Universal is simply dropping the HD DVD side, with no other changes to the discs' content."

Should it read they are dropping the DVD side?

Considering the combo discs for these two are only $23.95 at Amazon, I don't really get the point of this.

In Universal's line up list, very few are combo discs.

I don't quite understand the combo disk idea. How many times am I going to watch the movie such that I need 2 format versions of it? I wonder if Universal has come to the conclusion that combo disks are not the way to go.

Universal's new policy is combo discs for day and date releases, which makes sense IMO.

I have AoD and I did think it was strange to release this film on a combo format since it's pretty old. It's interesting that they are not going to make any changes as this title has no extras. I wonder if they are planning to re-release most of their older titles that came out as combos.

I think they should continue with the new Day/Date titles. But older titles that were purchased many times over should only be HD DVD. Glad Universal is getting wise. The numbers were probably not adding up and it was probably costing them more than they were making. I looked at Amazon and DVD Empire and Both Army and Unleashed are around $25.00, so they were not too steep in price. The new versions will probably be around $20.00.

I agree with this. In fact I have gotten a few people to buy some combo discs so they can use them down the road when they get an HD-DVD player. Now hopefully I can get them to pick up a player soon now that the prices have started to drop.

I thought they were going to make 90% combos. Have they changed that policy?

It appears to be so.

I'm very happy I held off on buying Army of Darkness! Now they just need to do the same thing with the rest of the combos. So far I've only purchased 1 combo (Animal House), and that was because I was desperate for a comedy. I'm still holding off on Half Baked and several other combos. My feeling is that if you need SD versions for the kids to use, then get them the SD version. Why get them the combo when they're just going to end up destroying your HD version along with the SD. You'd be better off getting an iTunes account and downloading the movies and TV shows you want for your kids to watch. This is made all the more easier with the release of the AppleTV product. That way you already have a digital version, it can be played on upto 5 different computers, and you can legally back it up all you want.

I personally really like it. I can take my movie over to a friends or parents or let someone barrow it and they can use the DVD side.. Also i can burn backups of the dvd side as well.

if they are going to make combo disks im in favour of the TOTALHd disks with blu ray on one side and hd on the other... plus the dvd/hd dvd disks are crazy overpriced... if it was 1 or 2 $ extra no big deal but 10$ more thats insane i can buy a DVD for that much. On the TOTALHD disk thing as much as im comitted to HD DVD im not 100% sure itll win in the end as a result i wouldnt mind paying 5$ more and be what sony would call "Future proof"

Combo's on catalog titles doesn't make sense. If you're a fan of the movie then you probably already own the SD, no need to sell you another.

Combo's on new releases do make sense as they offer the first time buying a movie to have a copy that works in every DVD player I own and when I can be at my HDTV/HD DVD player, I get to watch the HD version. I've always supported combo's for that point, but they need to still be competitively priced (within $3 at the most) otherwise it's not really a value.

I think this is a good move as it will let them throw out a lot of titles at cheap prices.
