We just posted Peter's review of 'The War Within,' an unusual independent film brought to high-def disc courtesy of Mark Cuban's Magnolia Pictures. Peter quite liked the film itself, calling it "thought-provoking" and "courageous." This HD DVD release is not cutting-edge, nor is it any way demo material, but the video and audio serve the shot-on-HD flick well, and Peter found the audio commentary to be enlightening. Worth a look.

To the editors:
The tech specs on the left-hand side of the page were not updated or were omitted, although the review itself obviously reflects what video and audio codecs were used. Otherwise, nice review. I may end up renting this film. Thanks!

Where can I get it? You have a link to DVD Empire, but they don't list it!

The only places that I could find online that had it in stock were, Barnes and Noble, BestPrices, and tower.com. There may be a few other places, but this is a "hard to find" disc for HD DVD.

The reviewer wrote "Yet there is no fire and brimstone, no burning buildings, no pumped-up Hollywood melodrama of the kind that (however noble and well-intentioned) usually seeks only to placate our anti-Muslim preconceptions and passions post-9/11, not challenge them."
May I ask to which films this referers? Since 9/11 Holywood has churned out a string of anti-American, anti-war and anti-military films with disturbing regularity -but there has not been a single Sands of Iwo Jima or Bridge at Remagan type film for this war. The fact that all those anti-war flicks have been collosal commercial flops, sometimes in spite of the presence of big-draw actors, should tell the studios something. The only recent films that don't fall into this category were the Kingdom (great movie, but not about the war per se) and Flight 93 (based on a reconstruction of real events). |
