Default 'Tideland (German Import)' - High-Def Digest Review

Josh's review of 'Tideland (German Import)' is up. He says this isn't a blind purchase. This German import HD DVD has excellent picture, very good sound, and a decent selection of bonus features. It merits a qualified recommendation for big Gilliam fans.

Good to see the imports gettting reviewed Just watched this last week, have to say it's one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen. Couldn't really form an opinion on it from the first viewing as I didn't feel like I got it, but I'll give it a second watch soon. Can't comment on the audio, but the PQ was great, just check out the grasshopper in the opening scenes.

Very nice review Josh. I'm also glad to see import reviews coming with a greater frequency. HD DVD is a one region format after all.

Xploited also lists a Blu-Ray version of TIDELAND from Concord. Same 2.35 aspect ratio.

I loved this movie, and never understood why it did get so much bad reviews. This is a dark fairytale from the master of weirdness, and I loved it when I finally got to see it. Recommended to all who like their movies a bit different, and the HD DVD itself was excellent as well!

This is one of my favorite movies of recent years, and this HD DVD is such a huuuuuuge improvement in PQ over the local DVD. I'm so glad I imported it.

My secondary TV is in my livingroom and is a 42" Panasonic Viera 1080p plasma screen. I've got a Samsung BD-UP5000 connected to that for all my HD needs. No surround sound there, though.

I would agree with the Bottom Line: This one is worth it for the fans. Other than that, this is definitely one to steer clear of. I did not care for it at all.

I hope that Gilliam's film with Ledger is a triumph, though!

Default The Blu-ray is region-free, too!

I just want to add to Josh's review that the identical release by Concorde is region-free, too. I own it and watched it on my region A Panasonic, so I can confirm that it is not region coded.

Default Most overrated director....ever.

From this review and considering Gilliam's other uneven efforts it sounds as if directing may biting off more than he can chew. Perhaps he should become a cinematographer. Even his best films are almost unwatchable. He couldn't stay focused long enough to get the aspect ratio right? Why studios give people like this millions of dollars to make movies is a mystery.

Actually Gilliam is more of an artist then most Hollywood directors and the studios don't give him "millions of dollars" because his movies usually don't appeal to a mainstream audience. Thats why he has so much trouble with producers because while he is trying to create his vision, the producers are worried about getting more people in the theater, and start meddling where producers should not meddle. Most of his movies also involve a certain amount of mental work on the part of the viewer to understand what is going or and the ideas that Gilliam is trying to get across. If your coming to a Terry Gilliam movie to just "turn your brain off and watch a flick" then you went to the wrong movie. What's interesting is that Gilliam generally fails when he tries to make mainstream movies, just look at Brothers Grimm, but even his worst movies are better then most of the stuff spewed out from the Hollywood studios. And his good movies are some of the greatest most creative movies ever made. (edit: Thought I'd add that almost every Gilliam movie is about losing yourself into fantasy. It's a theme that runs through everything he does.)

Well, I blind bought it - threw it in multi-title order from Amazon Germany last week. But, not without consulting imdb.com for details & user comments - and knowing any Gilliam film is going to be . . . . different. Looking forward to it.

Yeah, Dr. Parnassus should be interesting with Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell filling in roles for Heath Ledger.
