Default 'The Machinist' - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of 'The Machinist' Has been posted. He says it's a fascinating film that features one of the most disturbing performances he's seen in recent memory. This Japanese HD DVD has a stunning video transfer and an impressive Dolby Digital Plus track, but excludes the domestic DVD's audio commentary. This one is worth importing if you can't wait for domestic release plans to be announced.

ok, I was torn and sort of on the fence with this one, but Xploited needs to pay you commission because I will be ordering this when I get home tonight.

Thanks for the great (somewhat late) review!

Agreed. A great film. One of the better ones I've seen recently. In my top ten for the past year -- well worth the import.

I still need to get this one. It's actually one of the few titles I haven't double dipped on, almost every SD-DVD that I have that has been put on I've already gotten. Just been putting it off due to the high price, hopefully it will still be available on Xploited whenever I get around to taking the plunge.

Oh and Ken you forgot about Vincent D'Onofrio, who gained 70 pounds for his role as Pvt. Lawrence in Full Metal Jacket

i didn't think this film was THAT impressive transfer wise, but hey, whatever works! just glad that the high pq review will get this title some sales and more attention from those who haven't heard of it before. definitely an awesome, pretty trippy movie

Great review, thanks and keep them (import reviews) coming! I have this but haven't got around to watching it yet, but it's nice knowing that it has a great transfer.

I recommend that whoever wants this to get it now because it won't be around for very long. HMV (Japan) says on their website that it's no longer available from the manufacturer.

Christian Bale may be insane. He lost all that weight for this movie, then immediately bulked up for Batman Begins. Right after that, he slimmed down to a wisp again for Rescue Dawn, and then pumped up again for The Dark Knight.

That's just not a healthy way to treat your body. People die young doing things like that.

Yeah, that was crazy. I'd only ever seen him in American Psycho a few years ago when it came out and was talking about it to a friend one day and he recommended "The Machinist" to me, that's how I found this movie. I couldn't believe it when I first saw him onscreen. Insane seeing him so ripped in American Psycho and then the next movie he is probably less than half of that weight.

I think it was on the commentary or one of the featurettes, but the director said

"I knew Christian was going off on his on to prepare for the role and lose weight, but when I saw him I freaked out. Then he went on to continue losing weight during production to the point we'd take breaks between scenes because he was too physically weak to go on. He'd drink water only for days on end and have a piece of bread here and there until he finally reached like 115-120 lbs and I pulled him aside and said STOP IT! If you die you are not helping, and will f*** up my picture. This is insane, it's just a part and not worth your life"

Crazy. Great performance.

That's definitely not a healthy way to lose weight quickly, and it's been rumored that he used a lot of steroids to bulk back up for Batman.

I say "rumored", but just looking at it, it's simply not physiologically possible to build up that much muscle mass in that sort a time period any other way. Allegedly, he showed up on the Batman set so large that Christopher Nolan had to tell him to back down because he didn't want Bruce Wayne to look like a bodybuilder.

Great review! I've had this disc for along time now and always wanted to see a review of it on here. This is still one of my most prized disc's in all of my collection.

Peace
