Default 'The Triplets of Belleville (French Import)' - High-Def Digest

Josh's review of 'The Triplets of Belleville (French Import)' has been posted. He has mixed feelings on the movie, but says this HD DVD looks about as flawless as the movie can, and sounds pretty great too. This is worth a look.

I have this, and it looks and sounds awesome. This is a great animated movie, even better that many of Disney's classics. However, it is a little different and some may not like its leisurely pace. It's got some wickedly funny moments and it's definitely not a kids movie.

I always wanted to get the DVD but never did... now I want the HD-DVD, problem is I just cannot justify spending $40 on it.

Did the American version of this movie have subtitles? I've seen it twice, but can't recall.

Nice to finally see a review here. The movie and the animation is so very good and original.

The Region 1 DVD from Sony was technically dubbed into English. However, only about 3 lines of dialogue were actually dubbed. Most of the background dialogue (voices in the crowd, radio and TV announcers, etc.) were left in French without translation. It was a pretty half-assed approach, and I don't know why they bothered.

The DVD also replaced the opening credits with English text from the British theatrical release, which retitled the movie as "Belleville Rendez-vous". When that appeared on screen, a subtitle popped up underneath to mistranslate that title as "The Triplets of Belleville". I guess Sony didn't think Americans were smart enough to have heard of such an exotic foreign word as "rendezvous".

The HD DVD has the original French credits with the title as "Les Triplettes de Belleville".

I have owned three copies of this film.

Originally I picked up Sony's domestic DVD. I loved the film, but was greatly put off by horrendous ringing on horizontal lines.

I picked up a cheap copy of Tartan's UK release. This did not have the ugly enhancement of the US disc, and offered a much better picture as a result, as well as a DTS track.

I was given the HD DVD last Xmas, and of course its the best of the lot by far. I will keep my Tartan DVD though, for the translated extras.

If you love this film, you will love this disc.

Nice review as well. With the domestic releases drying up, maybe they can do some more import reviews because the members here are buying more imports than ever and we could use some formal reviews to guide us.

The $40 price tag is keeping me from buying this. Too bad because I really adore the film.

Average price for an import, IMO. xploited.com is the only known source left for this movie, and it looks like it will be unavailable at online stores after he sells out (I'm sure Josh's review won't hurt Tony's sales of this )

What do you expect?

It's coming from the other side of the world and from a country where our currency is much weaker than theirs.

I finally ordered this together with Elephants Dream today from Xploited Cinema. Need to get them while they are still available

$36.95 is actually less than average for an import (in the good old days before all the sales that is).

I understand why it is expensive perfectly well. Unless you are absolutely in lust with a film, however, I can't see spending this much money. This is a great film, but I can resist. The last time I spent this much was on an out of print Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! DVD.
