Default 'Atonement' - High-Def Digest Review

Peter's review of 'Atonement' has been posted. He has mixed feeling about this romantic epic, but says this HD DVD has its good points, with good video, so-so audio, and a rather standard supplements package. The film and the story have their problems, but this is worth a look.

I just received my copy in the mail today. After reading the review, I am looking forward to checking it out - sounds like it should look great and even the story sounds interesting even if potentially flawed.

I'll admit that the ending kinda surprised me, but I didn't hate it. Overall, I thought it was a good movie - not GREAT - but good.

I dug this movie a lot (#3 of 2007 for me), so I'm looking forward to watching it. I picked it up today from work and will prolly check it out tomorrow or Thursday. I wish the audio was a little better though.

Purchasing this film was a little bitter sweet.

The last Universal HD DVD.

At least Warner is still releasing in HD DVD.

Which I still think is one of the most ironic things i've ever heard of. The studio that essentially killed off HD DVD is the last one releasing on the format.

WTF is the deal with Universal and Paramount and lossless audio?

They give Fletch a TrueHD track, and give this a DD+ track.... WHY?

Paramount gives A Mighty Heart a TrueHD track, but Transformers and Stardust only get DD+...

I don't know why but the then HD-DVD studios love DD+.

I'm so glad blu-ray won just because of no more Dolby Digital Plus crap.

You would have to change the movie's title if it had a different ending. Heh.

I thought this was the best movie of the year, and the ending was extremely powerful. I don't see how anyone could think otherwise, but we all have different tastes. For instance, I thought the ending to No Country for Old Men was weak.

I blind-bought/pre-ordered this due to all the praise. 3 stars only?

I'm still looking forward to seeing this. At least it has stellar PQ.

Atonement was, hands down, the best drama of 2007.

While Peter states that the ending is a "fatal narrative flaw," it is actually the strongest dramatic ending in recent memory, and gives the story its weight and its meaning. It is a perfect conclusion that literally punches you in the stomach.

Perhaps he should take another look at the film with knowledge of the ending. I guarantee it will deepen the experience and make more sense.

There would be no film without this ending -- it gives the entire story its meaning, literally.

the audio is a disappointment (due to the lack of a TrueHD track)
Gimme a break, this had nil impact in Transformers and Beowulf, so why would it have such impact here? This is a strong unfounded presupposition when it could very well have been down to how the audio was mixed in the studio aka the master itself.

Man, all you self-professed Golden-eared boys never stop complaining about this high-bitrate, highly efficient codec.
