Default First Twin HD DVD to be released in US!

The Twin is an HD DVD that can play on both HD DVD and regular DVD players with eveything on one side of the disc getting getting rid of the flipper format.

This is related to a title I already opened a thread about, but I thought this development demanded its own discussion:

Freedom Vol 1 will be released on the HD DVD/DVD Twin Format disc, that is a single-sided disc containing both the SD and HD versions of the main feature, and can be played back on both DVD and HD DVD players. No flipping required.

Is this a triple layered Hd Dvd? Or does is it sacrifice any of the 30gigs? I guess 25 gig is enough for a feature and have another disk for extras.

I know that the specification of the Twin format allows 30Gb HD DVD, but beyond that I do not know what is planned specifically for this title.

Bandai in this case, but once manufacturing lines are established, it is probably only a matter of time before other studios take advantage of it. This is after all a great bonus, if most studios used this then HD DVDs wold really start looking to be backwards compatible.

I think this is a great idea. I have not been able to borrow some of my movies to my friends since they do not have players.

You must have better eyes than I.

But, the HD DVD side always has a red label in the center, on the side facing up. Saves searching for my reading glasses.

twin format is great

i have one myself

when you pop in the disc, it will ask you whether you want to play dvd or hd dvd version.

it's that simple and easy to use.

kind of like the widescreen vs. fullscreen offerings on the non-flippers.

I don't get it. How can a 30GB HD DVD play on a "regular' DVD player? A 'regular' DVD player shouldn't be able to read the DL 30 GB disk.

I can see them fitting a standard DVD version on a 30 GB HD DVD disk, and then an HD DVD player detecting it and the main menu giving a choice between the HD or SD version.

But the first line that this "twin HD DVD playing on a standard DVD player has me scratching my head.

The only way this could work is if it's a relatively short feature. There is no way that all 30 gigs of HD space could be used AND a seperate dvd stream.

The twin format is a triple layer format. It is either 2 layer HD DVD (30Gb) and 1 layer of DVD (4.5GB) or 1 layer of HD DVD (15Gb) and 2 layers of DVD (9Gb). Of course, they can also do 1 layer of each. These have already been used in Japan, but it will be great to see them start being used in the USA since it gives much more transparent backwards compatibility.
