Media obviously NOT being pulled, sales numbers
While the press release is sad, I am glad to see Toshiba will continue to support HD DVD owners and that media will NOT be pullled from shelves in March. So much for that bit of FUD.
Only 700,000 players sold worldwide? Wow, that is pretty poor, I thought it was a million in the USA alone. If the CEO has his figures right, it was 600,000 with half of those Xbox drives. That means the A2 sale put almost 1/3 of the standalones into the market into a single day.
Pretty impressive they had about 40% of the media market with so few players. People who had the machines were buying movies.HD-A1

Of course that was FUD made by the press. I wonder how old the autors of such press releases are. They seem to be born long after the last formatwar and the fading of Laserdisc (Indeed I'd think there is some 6 year old behind the desk while reading some of the press releases with all this childish words).

Those figures are without a single doubt incorrect. Anyone who has even remotely followed this format war knows that.

The numbers are coming directly from Toshiba's CEO:
Q: How many HD DVD players and recorders, exactly, did you sell?
A: 600,000 players in the US -- 300,000 of which were Xbox 360 HD DVD drives. 100,000 units were sold in Europe. And about 10,000 players and 20,000 recorders in Japan. So about 730,000 units worldwide. -

Who's to say that Universal, Paramount, and Warner won't recall their HD DVD's from store shelves?

If any stock is returned by retailers to the distributors it will just be sold off at amazon. Could be a very good time to get some HDM. I already have a large enough collection of discs to ensure I will be keeping a HD DVD standalone in my set up for several years so I expect to buying quite a few more.
The Red cases will always displayed proudly as spoils of the 'format' war.
