Default 'Lucky Number Slevin' - High-Def Digest Review

Just posted Kenneth's review of 'Lucky Number Slevin.' He quite liked the film itself, which he says is propelled by top-rate performances from an A-list cast. As an HD DVD release, it also fairs pretty well, earning 3.5 stars (out of 5) for video, and 3 stars for both audio and supplements. And hey -- not for nothing, this one even boasts (a little) geniune HD DVD exclusive content...

Did anyone else experience playback problems on this disk? My HD-A1 would lock up solid in about the middle of chapter 14 IIRC.

Great movie though.

Great playback, and I also felt that the PQ was better. One of the Best I own.

I also thought the PQ was really good. Come on, just look at the part with all the blue chairs.

I haven't watched this one yet, I got it as part of the BB deal....I keep hearing mixed reviews about the movie, so, I'm hoping it's as good as the positive reviews I've read. I'm concerned it's one of those movies where once you figure out all of the twists it is one you really don't go back to.

Would any of you say that this is true?

There is one small technical mistake in the review. Dolby Digital is incapable of outputting higher than 640Kbps. The review states that the bitrate is 1.5Mbps. This is probably from the Toshiba player converting the DD signal to DTS, which it does for DD+ or the audio is encoded in DD+, not DD. But I'm not sure which.

I would say it's one of those movies that you watch again because you learn the twists. It's a really good movie that I have watched more than once. The second time I watched it was to pick up the little things involved in the twists (if that makes sense).

Thanks guys, I'm sold. Tonight I'm going to watch Total Recall and see what the PQ and AQ is like on that, then I'll check out L#S if I have time.

I thought the video would be a little higher, it's very very clean and the Cityscapes I'd blame more for poor CG/Composite shots rather than the video quality. IMO, I'd put it at a solid 4 for video at least.

Hi all - thanks for your comments.

I wanted to clarify my video rating: while I was extremely impressed with the contrast and the transfer's ability to handle the many varying details of the wallpaper, I was particuarly distracted by the overall softness of the picture outside of high contrast scenes like the airport. If you look at natural elements in the apartment, skin detail, and clothing texture, you'll see that it isn't nearly as sharp as other video transfers that have received a 4 or a 4.5 on our site. Thus, the comparitive 3.5.

Again, you're certainly entitled to your opinions! This was just mine.
