Default 'Resident Evil: Apocalypse' (German Import) - High-Def Digest review

Just posted Josh's latest import review, of the German HD DVD release of 'Resident Evil: Apocalypse.' Though this "extended version" of the flick boasts an additional four minutes of content when compared to the domestic Blu-ray, Josh says that's the only thing that makes this release notable.

Image Constraint Token?! Wow! I'm glad I have a kick-ass setup, I would hate to have my HDM downconverted.

Thanks for the review, HD-DVD fans get it while it lasts, Constantin Films is going Blu-ray exclusive.

What is this ICT is it something to do with HDCP??

Also does the 360 add on deal with it and allow for 1080P res rather than downbraded to 480P

The 360 will allow it over HDMI and possibly over VGA (which is classified as a computer connection, so does not have same restriction as component - I just am not sure how ICT applies to VGA).. Component would get downconverted.

Btw, insiders on AVS said months ago that constantin realized they made a mistake and new runs were supposed to be fixed. The problem is making sure you get a disc from a newer run...

Unless your 360 is connected via HDMI or VGA then your image will be downscaled to 480p.

I don't have HDMI on any of my displays so I'll be passing this one up. Stupid to be inforcing the ICT already. However I do have a 360, VGA, and my projector accepts VGA, so if I really wanted to I could just get the add-on and use VGA to get a 1080i picture, but screw it I just won't buy the movie.

EDIT: Just saw Blurry's post, so hopefully they didn't mean to add the ICT and maybe I'll get it if I can find one that doesn't have it.

You said in the review that the commentaries are missing, but as I'm typing this, I'm listening to the cast commentary from this disc.

My secondary TV is in my livingroom and is a 42" Panasonic Viera 1080p plasma screen. I've got a Samsung BD-UP5000 connected to that for all my HD needs. No surround sound there, though.

Yes, both movies were encoded it. However, per Blurry's post above, later pressings may have removed it.

Is it there? I'll check again. Where is it in the menus? No commentaries are mentioned on the packaging.

The Blu-ray has 3 commentaries. Are they all there?

If you ordered from Xpolited Cinema, you're likely to get the older pressing. That's where I ordered from.

As I already said in the BD Resident Evil review thread, this and all other HD-DVD discs from Constantin/Highlight will be discontinued from March 01, 2008. So, no new pressings here. They just sell HD-DVDs out and will continue with BD only.

Edit: Just saw, that the other big german publisher Senator will also discontinue their HD-DVDs and will continue with BD only. This march, they will release Death Proof and 1408 most likely still on both formats. Senator has released Pans Labyrinth on BD here already last summer.

But Constantin will also release "Resident Evil: Extinction" on HD DVD before supporting BD exclusively. Street date here in Germany is February 14, 2008.

Yes, there are three audio commentaries on the HD DVD (at least on my one). Press "MENU" on your remote, go to "Einstellungen" et voilą, "Audiokommentar der Darsteller / des Regisseurs und der Produzenten / der Produzenten" (actors / director and producers / producers).
