Thumbs up 12 Monkeys -- No Dolby TrueHD

Reviewed 12 Monkeys tonight:

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/12monkeys.html

Alas, there is no Dolby TrueHD track. And the transfer is all over the place. But I forgot how great the "Hamster Factor" is, so overall this is still a fairly good disc.

Im glad im not the only one who thought it went up and down, some scenes where everything you expect form a hd movie others where very very soft. Overall i thought it still looked clean, and a good edtion to anyones hd collection.

[Thanks for removing the spoiler, Peter.]

BTW, what's wrong with Universal? Both this and Spartacus are among my favourite movies, and they both are somewhat disappointing. Oh well, just shows you how good Warner are at what they do.

I was also a tad bit mixed on this disc. Really great movie but the transfer had its ups and downs... Still, the movie is really great though.

Default is it better than the DVD

Okay. So I read the HD DVD of 12 monkeys is a disappointment.

What I am wondering is: do I get rid of my DVD (where the black levels were quite good if I remember correctly) and buy the HD DVD version? Or am I better off just sticking with the collector's edition DVD?

thanks

I'm disappointed about this also, though glad I waited until the review went up! I was really looking forward to that

Just watched this. With time I really think they can re-do this disc and have a much better outcome PQ wise. Probably released too early in the HD game.

The transfer's ok, grainy soft source material I guess but I'm satisfied that this disc is the best possible way of owning this film and probably will be for years. Great extras too, so I can't quibble with $20 on Amazon

I ordered the German Release of 12 Monkeys on HD DVD. (Also available on Blu-Ray here) It contains a German DTS-HD MA Track and a English DTS-HD HR Track. It has been delayed here in Switzerland, but I should get it this week. I hope this one has better PQ than the US Release, but it will most likely be the same Transfer.

Is this a joke? who cares about the picture quality of Christmas Vacation. 12 Monkeys is a late classic and this disc is the best version available. If your looking for macroblocking during this film then your not actually watching it!

Uhm....no, its not a joke. Since people on this board dislike the Christmas Vacation transfer, but I like it, I was using it as something to gauge against.

After picking this title up cheap from an online retailer, I was somewhat surprised to see that while it is 1.85:1 (with the expected thin black bars on the top of the frame), my copy also has black bars on the side as well! Did I get a misframed disc???

Edit: OK, I just found this thread about the framing:

http://forums.highdefdigest.com/hd-dvd-software-general-discussion/6388-12-monkeys-hd-dvd-question-odd-aspect-ratio.html#post113403

This is the only title I have notcied ever doing this on my set (16:9, 47" Westy)...

The "small bars" disappear after the opening.

OK, maybe I have to watch a little further, but it appeared as though the film has "started" already (post main credits)...I'll keep an eye out. Thanks!

Edit: Thanks, twonunpackmule...you were right, they disappear right after the "Directed by Terry Gilliam" credit appears.
