Thumbs up Interpreter review -- High-Def Digest

Just finished checking out The Interpreter:

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/interpreter.html

Like the movie more than I thought I would, but was mixed on the transfer. A bit noisy and artifical-looking. Soundtrack and extras are good, though... so still a thumbs up.

From speculation I've heard it seems as if Universal used this as their test for AVC which could be the reason for the delay. The PQ was not as good as their VC-1 releases (thank god it's just some run-o-the-mill movie) and I seriously doubt they're going to abandon VC-1 anytime soon.

Given that we haven't seen this movie in MPEG2 or VC1, how can we be 100% sure that it's the AVC encode that sucks and not the master? I doubt they'd abandon VC1 either, for the most part I expect they'll stick with what they no unless there's some big internal reason (ie licensing) that makes them want to move to AVC.

I am surprised that the sharpness of the disc does not seem to be satisfying. I saw "The Interpreter" yesterday on BSkyBs UK "Sky HD"-Service in HD (they use MPEG4-AVC) and it looked very sharp and detailed. The colors were a bit strange but compared to the gritty-low quality look of most current movies it was OK.

I've always disagreed with this review. I feel the PQ deserves a 4, if not a bit higher.
