Thumbs up 'The Scorpion King' - High-Def Digest Review

We're finally getting around to some of the lingering unreviewed titles from November/December. The first of these on HD DVD is 'The Scorpion King,' and guest reviewer Kenneth Brown does the honors.

While he didn't love the film itself or the supplements, this HD DVD delivers on the bottom line, with both video and audio earning top-shelf scores of 4.5 stars (out of 5).

Full review here:

Look for our next HD DVD flashback review ('The Adventures of Robin Hood') Monday...

All three of the Mummy movies on HD DVD have looked excellent, IMO. Very well done! (If only Stargate BR could have looked this nice -- oh well.)

I thought the audio wasn't as good as Ken did (4.0/5) but had similar thoughts on the film and video:

I have all three. I actually liked SK. Great movie for watching on a frigid and very snowy day in North East Ohio a few days back.

Default What bit rate is the audio?

Hello - I've enjoyed the HD DVD reviews posted on this site very much!

I especially like how the reviewers comment about the specific bit rate of the audio, such as whether a DD+ track is the full 1.5 Mbps or 640 Kbps and so forth.

I noticed however that this review and the last review (The Departed) did not make specific mention of the bit rate. I'm not sure if this was an oversight or whether the reviewers are moving away from that, but I hope future reviews will continue to provide that info.

In the meantime does anyone know what the bit rate is for the Scorpion King? Thanks!

It's fun, mindless entertainment. I posted last week about my rental from Netflix freezing up in my XA1, and when I took the disk out I saw the standard DVD / HD DVD sides coming apart. But, I was enjoying the movie, so I had Netflix send me a replacement. The two sides of this one seem firmly glued together. So looking forward to watching the rest of it this weekend.

The bad disk frroze up right after the fire ants scene - that ws a pretty intense scene.

I was expecting a better picture after reading the review here - to my eyes it had an edgy kind of over enhanced feel to it at times - at other times it was soft and lacking detail and other times quite sharp - a mixed bag. I've seen many better looking discs than this.

There was also something off with the audio - I had to raise my levels a few dBs above reference level to get the volume I wanted.

A *fun* film though if you like that sort of thing - and I do.

How does the horrendous CG hold up towards the end of the film (the Rocks face), I would imagine its even worse in HD :-)
