Default 'Stardust' - High-Def Digest review

Josh's review of 'Stardust' is up. Although the movie itself currently rates a 75% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, Josh was not a fan. As an HD DVD release, it fares only marginally better, earning slightly above-average marks for for video and audio.

While I appreciate Josh's opinion, I think I'll wait and hear other people's opinions, since pretty much everyone around me (as well as Rotten Tomatoes, as he mentioned) gave it positive reviews. His dislike of the movie seems to carry over into other sections of the review, through little jabs here and there. Whether or not the movie actually influenced his opinion about the PQ/AQ, or if it's merely coincidental, is what I'll be waiting on.

Ugh, well I'm still getting it. My mother really wants to see this, and it does look good.

Yeah I'd have to agree, his disdain for the movie carried into the other reviews. It also seems as if he went out of his way to compare it directly to the movie "The Princess Bride" rather then a movie of "its" own.

I'm still going to check it out ...it's in my Netflix queue.

Default How does it compare to the theatrical

What i want to know is how it stands up against what people saw in the theaters. I would appreciate if someone who did see this at the cinema, could report back with a comparison. The technical review of the film is disheartening(i really don't look at the actual movie review). I was planning on picking this up tomorrow, but now i may just netflix it.

My friend got this last Friday, we checked it out Saturday night and I thought it was pretty entertaining. 7 out of 10 movie-wise.

I'd score video quality about 7 out of 10 as well.

Claire Danes is unbelievably beautiful in this movie (as always).

Wow, interesting review. The reviewer must have a sour taste in their mouth for this movie.

I actually enjoyed this. Not fantastic, but pretty cute.

My GF (who's favorite movie is Princess Bride) loved this movie and said it is definetly a modern Princess Bride type movie.

But to each their own.

I thought the picture quality was better. At least 4 stars. My wife and I saw it in the theater and the HD DVD nailed the theatrical presentation. I enjoy the Princess Bride and love the dialog, but I actually enjoyed this as well. They are very different movies and really can't be compared. It's like comparing Shrek with Disney's Sleeping Beauty. They are both fairly tales and have a sleeping princess but that is about all they have in common.

Yep.. have to agree Josh's review seems fairly unprofessional and is a step-down for highdefdigest - i actually stopped halfway thru to check who wrote it - i got the feeling it was written by a 10 year old.
This is surprising given Josh's other excellent writing on the site.
Perhaps next time highdefdigest could get someone else to review a movie when there is such an obvious disdain from the original reviewer.

This is one of those movies that I'm really curious about, but mixed reviews have held me back from watching it. This review isn't really helping in that respect...

Wow. I haven't seen this movie, but my wife expressed interest in watching this when it came out. I'm still thinking about buying it, but Josh's review is giving me second thoughts.

Only one thing I don't quite understand is the HD Video Quality rating. I thought that rating was supposed to be the quality of the transfer to HD DVD? I always thought that if the transfer was faithful to the original, it would receive a higher rating. So, I guess I'm asking, is the transfer faithful to the original? If the movie is supposed to look "processed," then it's kind of hard to fault the PQ.

Kind of scratching my head at that one.

Really, Josh is very hit and miss when it comes to reviewing movie quality and then not letting it affect the rest of his review.

I don't care. Dune is a great movie no matter what the naysayers argue. The splendid HD DVD finally provides redemption for Universal after their last crummy DVD release. It has a terrific High-Def transfer that's the best the film has ever looked on home video. The bonus features aren't significant in volume, and foreign DVD editions have included excellent supplements that I wish could have made the transition here, but what we do get is packed with worthwhile content (love those deleted scenes!). I expect some controversy over it, but this is my review and I get to pick the rating. I'm a Dune collector and this disc is an essential part of my collection, therefore I can rate it no less than the highest DVDTalk Collector Series score. Deal with it.
