Things just keep improving as our review staff plows its way through the Harry Potter flicks. Kenneth says 'Prisoner of Azkaban' shifts to the tone of the series for the better, and though he wasn't particularly impressed with this disc's slim port of supplements, he says its remarkable transfer and vigorous PCM audio mix more than save the day.

I am very surprised to see all these HP movies getting such high PQ and AQ ratings. I was gonna hold off picking these up, but I may have to at least get this one and Goblet of Fire, the better of the first set of movies IMO.

Couldn't possibly agree more with the reviewer! The SD DVD didn't do this movie any justice what so ever. Having never seen this movie in the theaters (I was introduced to the series as the 6th book was coming out), I honestly thought all the effects were artificial looking... Even details such as wear on Remus Lupin was hard to pick out on the SD DVD, consequently I hated this this movie...
Having seen the HD version, my opinion has come around completely. It is still not my fav. potter movie, but it's stock has risen quite a bit. Remus turning into a wear wolf went from "you could do better in a video game" quality, to "OMG THAT'S AMAZING"... Hidden in the SD DVD was all kinds of texture, details like veins visible through the skin and even some wear wolf spittle. The Dementors also got a similarly huge boost, you could actually make out the details of their putrid rotting flesh. It was completely and totally amazing! Edit: So for Goblet of Fire, will you bother with the HD DVD US Edition since the UK is already done? I'm guessing a BD US edition (at least) will be done yes?

at the time this came out it was by far my favorite, I love what Alfonso Cuarón did with it.
This will be the next Potter movie that I get. |

GOF is a great one too, the transfer is a lot cleaner than POA (there's a bit of what looks to be film grain in POA)... But as far as getting an over all HD boost, I'd say POA wins hands down, this is almost a whole different movie!

3.5 for the movie..You got to be kidding.
Cmon Peter,, this film was leagues better than the 1st and 2nd but the same rating is givin. I think the film took a turn for the best with a more mature and darker, more young adult atmosphere and story. Not to mention the characters are starting to not look like their in Junior High. Although it doesnt beat Goblet of Fire,, this is my second favorite out of the movies released thus far. Oh,, and the PQ looks brilliant, along with the AQ!! Movie: 4.5/5 PQ: 4.5/5 AQ: 4.5/5 Overall: 5/5 |
