Default 'Shrek the Third' - High-Def Digest review

Just posted Peter's review of with 'Shrek the Third.' Although he was disappointed that DreamWorks continues to eschew high-res audio on A-list titles like this, he says a perfect five-star video transfer and a decent selection of high-def extras earn this one an overall recommend.

Default Great Review

I believe this to be the best looking HD DVD i have seen. While i agree the actual movie wasn't as good as pixar i still really liked. The amazing PQ make this an instant buy if for no other reason then demo material. I will definitly pull this out first when i want to impress my friends and show them what hd dvd is all about.

Thanks again, I'm sure someone was up late last night, or up early this morning to take care of this ;p

So overall based on their ratings this is just as good as the Pixar Short Films?

I guess I haven't seen all the shorts nor have I seen them on blu-ray (yet) but I did see Shrek 3.

Would it be unfair for me to say based on the shorts I have seen that overall rating just seems WRONG. A 3.5 maybe?

I thought this movie sucked but I am tempted to buy it just for the PQ.

My eyes agree with Peter... an absolutely stunning HD picture with this movie and very 3D.

Whether you like the movie or not (I liked it), it makes great HD demo material.

This was easily the worst of all three Shrek films. Think I'd rather wait for the inevitable release of the original Shrek movie, and hopefully the pq will be just as good.

I'm confused about the extra feature dubbed "picture in picture commentary" which is listed on the left hand side but it is not mentioned in his comments.
Or is the PiP commentary the storyboard feature that he lists under the HD goodies section? If so, what a huge disappointment. I was expecting a true PiP commentary from the actors and production team.

picked this up yesterday. Picture quality is GORGEOUS and the movie is still funny (though not as good as the other ones). I watched one of the "lost scenes" story boards and really wish that that was in the movie (the fauxley grail or something like that).

Definitely waiting for the other shrek movies to come to HD DVD... what's the hold up dreamworks?

I was a little unsure to pick this disc up, but this review has changed my mind. I am glad to see a perfect 5/5 PQ rating. I will defiantly be picking this up my next trip to Best Buy.

I don't understand why the reviewer moans about the audio 'only' being a 1.5Mbps DD Plus track, and then gives it 4/5.
If it's that bad why not give it a 2 or something.
To the human ear is anyone really going to be that bothered and that able to notice. I'm perfectly content with bog-standard 5.1 on the recent Transformers DVD without even thinking about hi-res audio.

First Bracke complains:

Quote:
The audio on 'Shrek the Third' is a comparative disappointment, if only because the film's engaging sound design deserves better than the Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 Surround track
And then he goes on to make himself look like an idiot by saying:

Quote:
It's impossible to know how much better this soundtrack might have been if Paramount had opted for high-res audio, but on its own terms this is still a fine presentation.
How on earth can someone complain about the audio without even hearing the studio master? How does he know the DD+ @ 1.5 mbps isn't transparent? Fact is, he doesn't. These reviewers should be forbidden to know technical specs of a disc until after their review is written (at which point they can then add in technical details but not alter their review). Seems like their preconceptions clouds their judgment.
