HD DVD Movie Question
Hi fellas I am brand new to this forum but I have a question.....
I am noticing that alot of blu ray movies are getting released and not too many hd dvds...I have the hd dvd add on for the 360 but regardless movies like me myself and irene is my fav and it seems to be only on blu ray....My question is eventually will this movie go to hd-dvd because it seems like a pattern that alot of the classics or older movies are coming to both formats eventually. I would like some clarification is possible that these movies eventually will be on both.
Thanks Fellas. -

Its going to be 12 brutal months my friend. The Blu-Ray movie studios are going to do everything they can to tempt you to buy into their format. Putting out the best movies they can find to make you drool. Make you feel like a loser for picking HD-DVD.
The choice is simple. Pick-up a Blu-Ray player and have both or wait them out. Buy as many HD-DVDs as you can to support your home team, hoping to prove to them they need to produce HD-DVDs too.
I am not sure where this is going. I know quite a few of us fought this same battle with DIVX (Circuit CITYs answer to DVD) when it came out against DVD. Both Disney and FOX jumped on that bandwagon. Only after 2 years and a lot of money being losted did DIVX die. Thanks GOD for that death.
I am hopeful that I will not have to choose and a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD combo player will arrive. Until then you will have to drool and stick to your guns. Good luck. -

Bluray is just flooding the market, yet it's not always about quantity but quality! I am also nervous about where HD-DVD is headed and they really need to stop with these Combo discs. It only hurts it's supporters! I cannot honestly say that I can see someone dropping $40 for a combo disc that does not own a HD-DVD player (for the mere fact that they may buy one in the near future) when they can simply just get a regular DVD for $19.99. I support the HD-DVD format completely and whole heartedly-with over 50 movies to my name and will continue to do so, but they really need to start pulling out the big guns. I'm not sure what they are waiting for.We also need more bonus features as they claim then ever before, there is but a handful that actually has the in movie experience. I think in order for HD-DVD to win this war, we need consistency more then anything. There seems to be a-lot of great movies pending with no release dates, which we really need. I know I don't stand alone in this-I could not care if they gave me release dates for December 2007, as long as I know that they are coming, I would be more then happy. I hope I don't come across as bitching this is just my opinion as to what is going on with our format. We will just have to wait and see....but one thing is for sure, I am not giving in and I absolutely refuse to buy a Bluray Player, I stand strong in this decision.

Dandeewish I agree with you 100%. I was going to buy Miami Vice but its only in combo format so I wont buy it. Is there a miami vice that is not combo?. I also will not buy blu ray I am sticking with hd. I purchased lucky number slevin and half baked off of hddvdworld the site i found through this forum. Great prices.

I also purchased Lucky Number Slevin, can't wait to see it-think it's coming tommorow. Here is another site that I use all the time, you can really get some great prices and has HUGE selections. This is my favorite site (Deepdiscountdvd.com) and check Overstock.com-they have great prices as well, usually on titles a bit older like the Bourne surpemancy, etc...

I agree with both of you guys on pretty much all points. I also have the add on for 360 as my HD player and I will not give in to Blu-ray one bit. We have made our decision and we should stand by it 100%.
I also agree that the HD-DVD side needs to release BIG titles soon. Both Universal and Warner Bros still have a ton of huge hits that they could bring out. Universal needs to announce Jurassic Park, Jaws, E.T., and other big ones soon. There is no point in holding back even though it is early in the war. They need to bring out those old Spielberg classics in AAA fighting form with PQ to rival stuff like King Kong, that's what will win people over, not Brokeback Mountain. They need to do everything possible to pursuade consumers to their side. I do think that a lot of the titles that have been announced for Blu-ray are mediocer movies even though it seems like they are going to have such a massive selection advantage over HD-DVD. Stuff liek Casino Royale, Speed, and others don't help us out much though.
Now the combo discs are another story altogether. These things shouldn't even exist. Why should we(the guys who already bought the HD player)have to pay more for the movies WE bought to have a standard def side on them because some jo schmo thinks he migh buy an HD player in the future? It's just dumb, and I think if Universal and WB really looked into this they woud realize that they are probably losing more sales than they are gaining from making this decision for those movies. Price advantage is a major reason why HD-DVD has done so well so far, don't shoot yourself in the foot right now. For example I wanted to buy the Miami Vice HD-DVD, but it's a combo. Not to mention I already have the standard def dvd from the day it came out. This movie is also insanely expensive on combo, the highest I have yet seen. Now if I bought this combo disc I would have just gotten the HD movie yes, but I would have basically just paid for a second copy of the standard def movie that I already have. I basically just bought this movie 3 times!!! WTF! I WILL NOT buy it, congrats Universal you just lost a sale right there and I'm sure there were many others that made the same decision to skip it as me. It pisses me off enough when I didn't already have the SDVD version, but when I already had it and I have to pay for that again because I wanted the HD version makes me very angry. Enough so to question what I got myself into with this HD war. The combo discs are the single biggest thing holding this format back right now. They NEED two SKUs for movies they want to do combos on. One for combos and one for just the HD version alone. I guarantee the combos would go away permanently very very fast.
Anyways don't let the above paragraph make you think I don't love this format. I do very much. Clearly already the difference in PQ over SDVD is huge and the way us people wiht HD movies should be watching them. I aslo have faith in the format that it will be the one to catch on, and if it doesn't the worse case senario I see is both HD-DVD and Blu-ray co-existing with all movies eventually coming to both formats. I also do think that the combo discs will stop in the next 6-8 months. Nearly everyone hates them, very few people support them. Overall the future is bright on HD-DVD, now bring on the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions, Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Heat, and Top Gun.

I can tell you it's not a fake cover. This one is a combo for sure. Sad but true. This is one movie I sadly don't think I can pass on even though it's a combo. HD-DVD needs to keep the price advantage and right now on Amazon the Blu-ray version is about five bucks cheaper. That's the combo's fault right there.

I'm still waiting for my UK HD-DVD of Miami Vice to arrive but the reason I ordered the UK version (which is slightly higher prices than a US import - go figure!) is because on most titles that are combo's in the US they've not been combo's here (Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift being the two most recent examples I can think of).
Touch wood, the UK seem to be saying "no" to combo's although it's a pain having to hold off purchase of US imports in the hope that they might get released here some way down the road.Ian Smith
