The Deer Hunter PQ...different opinions?
I was planning on picking up The Deer Hunter in HD, but it seems there's some dissenting opinions on the image quality. I tend to think the negative reviews aren't taking into account the look of the source material, but I might be wrong.
What's your take on the PQ? -

in most parts the movie looked great for an old flick, and then in some parts it looked like source material. I really enjoyed my hd copy. I thought it was as good as Deliverance's release was. Just my .02

I agree with cash. I rented it and most of it looks great, but there are some scenes that aren't up to par in terms of video quality. I'd still say it's worth it though.

Just watched my copy the other night and was satisfied. It is very good overall, but as others have said, there are some scenes where the quality dips a bit, but still a must-buy considering the film itself and the fact that it is a nice upgrade over the SD.

I need to give this a rent..Definitly slipped under my radar when I first jumped on the HDDVD bandwagon.

I never picked it up on DVD, so the HD disc is a no brainer. 70s films just tend to have a softer, gauzy look to them.

hey man,
this is a good transfer in my opinion, in the tense infamous Russian Roulette scene you can see deniro's make-up bruises for what they are and the hair's on walken's chin.. like the other guys say it has it's great PQ scenes and other just standard scenes..
to put it simply if you Love the movie buy the HD, if you like it then rent it.
mind you Deer Hunter is a movie i know myself, i can only watch 1 - 2 times a year... kinda an emotion-drainer haha -

agreed with all above, the most notable from what I remember were the opening scenes of the korean war. Especially the helicopter scenes.
Overall, its still a great flick w/ a good transfer.

I thought that it was the best I have ever seen it. The hot red molten steel in the factory at the beginning was definitely a good difference between the sd-dvd and the hd-dvd.

I just picked this up recently and I would say I agree with most of the other comments. There are parts where it is pretty flawless but others in which you can tell they did the best they could with what they had. For me purchasing this was a no-brainer since it is one of my favorite movies and I only had it on VHS
