Default 'Jack Ryan' HD DVD Recalled

We just posted a story on this topic:
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/1084

Here's the text of the email sent out by Paramount:

Quote:
Please be advised that there are typographical errors on the packaging for the Jack Ryan Special Collector's Edition HD-DVD. The packaging inadvertently notes special features that are not on the HD-DVD. As a result, this product is being recalled and street date is being delayed. We ask that you do not sell or rent this product to consumers and that you stop shipments to additional destinations.

A Paramount Home Entertainment Representative will contact you with an RA number to facilitate sending the product back to Paramount Home Entertainment's manufacturing facility. Returned product should include any unit previously shipped to retailers or other destinations as well as your on-hand inventory. We will provide further information on the availability of new product shortly.

Should you have any further questions, please contact a Paramount Home Entertainment Representative. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

It may be cheaper for Paramount to go one way, but I think in the long run, they'd be better off to create new discs that offer the content originally listed on the packaging.

Sure you could just create new packaging and re-release the discs, but we'd have some pissed off fans out there!

That is exactly what they will do, IMO. However, they need to recall just to avoid false advertising charges. A shame because I was looking forward to getting mine

A few of these will obviously pop up in various areas like ebay. For someone like me who doesn't care about special features, I would certainly be willing to get them (not at retail price of course). But then some people will be paying above retail just in case these don't get out for quite awhile, or possible never.

So does this mean they are putting the extras in, or just changing the packaging?

It sounds like the latter.

Paramount Home Entertainment said that the decision to distribute exclusively in the HD DVD format resulted from an extensive evaluation of current market offerings, which confirmed the clear benefits of HD DVD, particularly its market-ready technology and lower manufacturing costs. "Part of our vision is to aggressively extend our movies beyond the theater, and deliver the quality and features that appeal to our audience. I believe HD DVD is not only the affordable high quality choice for consumers, but also the smart choice for Paramount," said Brad Grey, chairman and chief executive of Paramount Pictures.

Of Blu-ray's greater storage capacity than HD DVD, the executive called it "a little bit overrated," saying that most titles don't require a capcity more than 30GB, and in cases where they do, Paramount would issue a second disc for bonus features.
The Look & Sound of Paramount.

Hey Mr. Grey (chairman and chief executive of Paramount Pictures), nice way to keep costs down & provide consumers with a "high quality" choice. You state that "extra features", demonstrate a clear benefit that appeals to your audience...yet you chose to exclude them? I guess your "lower costs" philosophy is to just exclude the bonus features entirely. And, I wonder how does a product recall figure into your "high quality & lower costs" philosophy?

Disc capacity shouldn't be an issue, because according to you most titles don't require a capacity more than 30GB... and disc capacity is “overrated”. So there's no excuse for not including them. However, you said when capacity was an issue, Paramount would issue a "second disc" if needed. I guess a second disc wouldn't be "cost effective." Nice commitment to HD DVD. The only thing overrated is your credibility.

Paramount wants consumers to pay more for HD DVD and get less? Sounds like an excuse to double dip in the future...how is that an affordable high quality choice for consumers? This BS & spin makes the DVD version look pretty good, it's cheaper & has more features. And Paramounts soution to "fix" the issue...is to offer new packaging? Are you kidding me? Is that what hi-def consumers want...new packaging? What are they going to call it... the "Not So Special Collectors Edition?" Hey, at least it's not a combo disc.

Hmm what to do. DeepDiscount already shipped my copy and wont be here for about a month with their glorious free shipping (takes that long to get here in Guam and I guess thats why they usually ship titles to me before the street date).

So they put the blame on the packaging error eh...it's easier to reprint & exchange the packaging than to re-press the whole discs...

Assuming I have the set & if the packaging is indeed "wrongly printed" I won't return my set. In fact I will keep it as a "collectible nolvety" LOL

Well, as an insider pointed out, it is likely that the discs were not meant to have the extra features, it seems likely that the marketing team designed the covers based on the DVD editions and that is where the error occurred. It will be a whole lot cheaper for Paramount to recreate the covers, or perhaps just put a sticker with a disclaimer blocking the non-existant features (hopefully that is what they will do, so they can get them out again fast).

so I am confused, Is Paramount saying they will recall the movies to put new artwork/boxset cover that doesnt list special features, or are they REALLY going to delay the boxset due to the intention of adding those aforementioned special features?
