Default 'Mobsters' -- pre-release buzz

Universal seems to be scrapping the bottom of the barrel with its latest HD DVD catalog release:

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/mobsters.html

This long-forgotten 'Young Guns meets The Godfather' yarn will hit HD DVD on January 8.

Tech specs are 1080p/VC-1 video and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio. There are no extras.

Retail is $29.98.

To paraphrase the great Roger Ebert, this film does not belong anywhere in the same sentence as barrels.

Jesus, what's next? THE WIZARD? COOL AS ICE? For all of the great titles they have, Universal has sure made some inexplicable choices for HD-DVD. Then again, this is the studio that put out pan-and-scan-only transfers of two long-awaited movies -- COLOSSUS THE FORBIN PROJECT and CHARLEY VARFICK -- on DVD a couple of years ago. Sheesh.

Honestly, I think that either of those movies has a bigger following than Mobsters. I'd probably pick up a copy of The Wizard.

It does often appear that someone at Universal has printed a big list of all the titles in their catalog, tacked it to a wall, and has been throwing darts at it to decide what gets released next.

Jeez... Is Collen Been still employed at Universal?

BTW, I think we're safe from Cool As Ice, they still have not released that on standard DVD...

LOL I was thinking the same thing. Maybe even numbers out of a hat.

Cheers

Sweet title. I caught this on VHS when I was younger thinking it was an actual gangster movie...but yeah put it best it is Young Guns Meets Godfather. Showed the cover to my girlfriend and she's already sold with seeing a Young Dr. McDreamy

Oh God McDreamy is in this movie. I better not tell my wife; she's a Greys Anatomy freak. Of coursed she's not happy about the 15 disk in two weeks so I may be safe.

I avoided this like the plague when I was younger, and will do so now.

What tool in Uni thought that one of their lead out titles for 2008 should be this 3 disc seller.

Like I Know Who Killed Me in the Blu Ray camp this is a movie that begs to be put on permanent delay.

If I put this title in my player it would probably blow up in protest rather than play it.

As far as it being a "lead out title", keep in mind that sales are typically very slow in January. Studios do not release their big guns at that time of year. January is when they dump their turkeys on the market.
