Default 'Transformers' - High-Def Digest review

Peter's review of 'Transformers' is up, and it's a whopper. The sheer amount of content on this 2-disc release is awe-inspiring, and the good news is that Paramount has backed it up with a strong video transfer and an even better audio track.

He's being generous with the 5* AQ rating considering it's DD+ 5.1, but it should still sound amazing...

i could care less about dolby truehd because my receiver only takes optical... but wow look at all those extras!...i love it how the blu boys in the smackdown forums can't be happy with dd+ when they are getting many many extras on the disc.

Very nice! I can't wait.

Honestly, I've been dropping by Wal-Mart's the past few days hoping someone puts out the HD DVD early. I'll be hitting Wal-Mart Tuesday when they open @ 7am.

I am glad it sounds good

I am mad that paramount made up a bogus excuse for no trueHD... this was a 2 disc release... space shouldn't have been an issue at all...

Paramount, see Batman Begins for reasons why TrueHD would have been fine...

that said, I look forward to my amazon shipment...

I would have gladly given every last extra on those discs away for Dolby THD. Who wants to take a bet they somehow overcome those "size limitations" when it comes time to double dip a year or two down the road?

I'm sure the soundtrack is great, but it isn't Hi-res, so I can't see how it deserves 5 stars.

If thats the case I guess there's no need for Hi-res audio full stop.

Thumbs up Great review, disappointed about the compressed audio.

Well, isn't this just wonderful. Another casualty of the format war. What do we have here?

1. No high resolution audio. No offence to the reviewer, but nothing beats uncompressed audio on a high end system. Especially the 96KHz/24bit tracks that are now appearing on Blu-ray, which beats SACD. Compressed audio is just not acceptable these days.
2. Who gives a rat's behind about interactive features. My kids, maybe, but not me! I would rather have Dolby TrueHD.
3. $40?!? I thought HD-DVD was supposed to be CHEAPER.

For the record, I own both HD-DVD and Blu-ray players, so I am not too affected by the format war. But when this format war gives us a compressed soundtrack, because Paramount received a big bribe to be exclusive with the HD-DVD for 18 months, all I can say is..... can't wait for the Blu-ray with lossless audio and even higher video bandwidth in 18 months time.

Having vented, I have my copy of Transformers already, and plan on watching it tonight.

Do you care more about specs, or about quality? It sounds like you care more about specs.

If the DD+ track is audibly indistinguishable from the studio master, what difference does it make whether the codec is compressed or not?
