'Star Trek' HD DVD to be Screened in Theaters
Wed Oct 10, 2007 at 11:00 AM ET

Mark your calendars, Trekkies! An episode from the upcoming HD DVD/DVD release of 'Star Trek: The Original Series' is headed to a theater near you.

As we've previously reported, 'Star Trek: The Original Series' will make its next-gen debut November 20 in a gargantuan HD DVD/DVD box set, featuring newly remastered picture and sound, all-new re-tooled special effects and tons of extras.

Now, as part of unique promotional campaign for the box set, Paramount Home Entertainment has announced plans to screen a classic episode from the HD DVD in select theaters nationwide on November 13, a full week before its scheduled release.

Nearly 300 theaters across the country are scheduled to take part, presenting the complete two-part episode "Menagerie," in full high-definition picture and sound. Each showing will also include a new taped introduction by Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry (son of the late 'Trek' creator Gene Roddenberry) and a 30-minute featurette that takes a behind the scenes look at the disc's remastering.

Alas, this big screen preview won't come free; tickets are being sold online at $12.50 a pop. For a full list of theater box offices and ordering information, visit www.FathomEvents.com.

Yeah, I will be going to this since it is showing at a theatre not far from me (well, 15 miles).

I like the way that it appeals to Star Trek/Sci-fi fans with the opportunity to see one of the better original episodes in a pristine theatre presentation AND also emphasizes the HD (HD DVD) technology with the making of section of the presentation. It will certainly make some converts.

I'm not a big Trek fan. The screen shots I viewed looked great, but the cost is a bit steep. In theatre 12.50? That is really high.

Well it's playing here in 2 theatres.. not the one I work at, both belong to our rival.

Going to be a nice promotion for HD DVD though.

Whether or not people will actually pay to go and watch this at a theatre is one thing. But without a doubt this is a great marketing idea and people, aside from Trek Fans, will hear about this release and generate attention. So good on HD for this move.

Dumb dumb DUMB to price it higher than a regular movie. This should be about reeling as many people in as possible to try to sell them on HD DVD, not filtering out everyone but the hardcore fans who are going to buy the set anyway.

Well, I think people are making a bigger deal of the pricing than merited. First of all it is only a couple of bucks higher than regular movie anyways and we need to keep in mind that this is a special one day event, not a general theatre showing and only at special theatres which can handle the HD satellite broadcast, which means that there is a lot more overhead than for a typical theatre presentation (at least in terms of run length and screening requierements).

Possibly there will also be a representative there to take questions since it is a special event (just speculating).

Digital projections are always HD. An SD digital projection would look atrocious.
