Default 'Mozart: Die Zauberflote' -- pre-release buzz

If you've been thirsting for opera on next-gen disc, mark October 30 on your calendar.

That's the day UK distributor Opus Arte will release 'Mozart: Die Zauberflote' (aka 'Mozart: The Magic Flute') on HD DVD in the US.

Shot with high-definition cameras and originally broadcast on the BBC, this 2003 production of 'Die Zauberflote' features Mozart interpreter Sir Colin Davis conducting the chorus and orchestra of the Royal Opera House and a glittering cast live at London's Covent Garden.

The release marks the second HD DVD to hit the states from Opus Arte, one of the UK's leading indie distributors of art, classical and opera titles on standard-def DVD. (Opus previously released 'Tchaikovsky - Swan Lake' this past May.)

Disc Details:

Street date is October 30, and MSRP $39.98.

i wish opera wasn't doing a show on mozart on hd dvd... i wish she was doing them back in the day shows where the wife was cheating on the husband with the brother and they all wanted to fight and yell at each other.

This is great news. HDM and Opera were born for each other. Keep those titles coming.

Edit: It's already up for pre-order at Amazon. They have the list price as $45.98 and with their 30% discount the price comes to $32.15. Those who heve experience buying opera on DVD know that's not a bad deal. I pre-ordered mine already.

Any confirmation that the Mozart disc will have 7.1 uncompressed audio?

And somehow I doubt this will be quite so popular with the PS3 crowd.

Default Defective disk

Received my copy as a direct order from England. The picture and sound are spectacular! Totally engrossing. Until Act 2. Major problems with my copy with stuttering, jumping, pixulating, crushing. After pulling the disk from the play I noted many small scratches and imperfections beneath the outer coating which couldn't be polished away. No effect whatsoever on the sound which remained full and glorious! Emailed Opus Arte in Wessex and told them of the problem. I received an almost immediate reply saying they were sending me a replacement copy post haste and I should return the bad disk so they could see what was wrong and hopefully correct the problem. Good people. Good company. I aleady have their Swan Lake from Amazon and the same quality seen in Act 1 of the Mozart disk is most definitely there. Definite qualifies as a demo disk. Look forward to Der Fledermaus in November (date of release in England).

I think it is likely that I will pick this up. I like Opera and if this is as beautiful as it sounds, then it should be a worthy addition to my collection.

I'm glad opera is getting some HD attention. The Met has been doing a series of HD simulcasts in movie theaters recently...a pretty unique offering. It would be nice to see those on disc some day.

There are 626 catalogued works by Mozart and this is only one of those works. It is however, one of his best compositions which is saying a lot considering most of his work is high quality.
