Default 'Troy: Director's Cut' - High-Def Digest review

Peter's review of HD DVD's first-ever double-dip is up, and he says the 30 extra minutes added to 'Troy' are a net gain, making this release a lot less superfluous than it might have been.

As an HD DVD disc, this one gets similar scores to the previously-released theatrical cut. Peter calls the video and audio both "terrific," and although this edition lacks the whiz-bang technology of the earlier edition's In-Movie Experience track, he says some new featurettes pick up the slack.

Just a rental for me really.... I saw the film at the cinema, rented the DVD, rented the first HD DVD.. if I rent this directors cut I think I'll have had my fill of this flick. I have already really, but I'm kinda curious what's been rejiggered.

At least this art work is better than the old one.

I absolutely agree, but you try saying that in the smackdown forum! All you'll get is a load of Blu Ray die-hards with sandy vaginas going on and on about an extra 20 gigs.

It's an old school numbers game to many of them, they don't care if the film looks and sounds fine as long as they've got MBPS to throw at you. Man, that place gives me a headache. Truth is that more efficient encoding and no pointless HD extras give you all the space you need and more for ginormous films such as this.

Too bad they cut the IME and retooled it. Sounds like a the BR disk format holding back the HD format. So Dolby TrueHD = Uncompressed PCM hey? Intresting...

Just watched most of it, and upon comparison to the original HD-DVD/Blu-ray PQ, it's a brand new grade on the transfer which is nice.

I really enjoyed the new cut (with more blood and gore), except for a few musical cues which got changed along the way ie the Hector/Achilles fight. It lost it's 'cool' factor, replacing the old score with a newly written over-the-top score which seems out of place. the original drums and beats worked so well imo.

I picked this up yesterday at CC and only threw it in to see how it looked.

I saw the original cut on DVD quite a while ago, and this new DC looks amazing. I enjoyed the movie before, so I'm really looking forward to the new cut of the film.

I'm looking forward to the TrueHD track also.

My guess would be that it's been so hard to find. After nearly weeks of being released my Best Buy JUST recieved their copies of Troy (same day as Transformers) but thats just a guess. Pick it up and the wait was worth it and I know many people will cast stones at me for saything this but I thought this was a WAY better movie then 300. Not saying 300 is a bad movie, but I enjoyed the story and movement of the movie, way more in Troy

WOW,

I ordered this movie on Amazon and the quality is just amazing. I really like this movie and it is much better than the theater version.

I am amazed at the PQ of this movie compared to the DVD. Everything comes alive and you really get the sense of debth that I did not get on DVD. The colors are great too compared to DVD.

After seeing this, I want Braveheart and Gladiator more than ever on HD DVD.

Come on studios...those are the type of HD DVD exclusive movies that could help against Blu Ray.

What are they waiting for?

I agree. This is exactly the kind of movies HD DVD needs to keep them in the game. I'm also looking forward to seeing Gladiator on HD DVD. come'on Dreamworks. . . Make it happen.
