I have the 720p HD broadcasts "while I wait" and I still keep watching them regularly. I just look forward to my jaw dropping just that little bit more when I get to go full 1080p, full HD bitrate.
Oh, and again for those now 100% familiar with it, episode 1 (Pole to Pole) is really just an extended trailer / anthology of the other episodes - or at least 2 to 6 anyway. -

thnx Ph8 this is great news. this is the entire season on discovery and thank god that the box set is supposed to be narrated by that english guy and NOT signouray weaver. i'm not a big fan of her voice. this looks great, i loved these episodes and it was the best looking broadcast on my tv hands down. i cant imagine what it could look like in 1080p!!!! can't wait. i'm ordering the blu-ray box set for now tho cuz i think the blu-ray label goes good with the blue earth haha (i have both formats).

King Kong HDDVD problems
I bought King Kong on HDDVD... i get an error message from my RCA 5000 HDDVD player saying that the movie cannot be played on this player... any suggestions?

Well, make sure you get any firmware upgrades for that player (I am not all that familiar with the process for that since the RCA represents a fairly small user base). After that, if you are playing other HD DVDs fine but this is failing, then it is a decent chance that you simply have a defective copy of King Kong.

If the HD DVDs match the HD broadcast - which were much much lower bitrate and 720p/1080i (depending on the test at the time) then it will still be jaw dropping. And rewatchable.
We all expect the 1080p HD DVDs to surpass what we have seen broadcast, so I will be putting extra padding on the floor to catch my jaw while it falls off

Will the HD discs be at 1080P or 1080i? The HDNet HD discs are at 1080i since that's te resolution it was recorded at.

The series was recorded on a mix of media, from film to HD video - apparently - so the end result will probably be 1080p. I am hoping it is 1080p, but TBH I just want the damned thing to ship.
The HD transmissions in the UK - during the terrestrial HD trial at least - was in a mix of 1280x720 and 1440x1080 - but this is more a result of the transmission systems testing than the original source I would think. -

So here's a question - what is the frame rate? We all know that UK/Europe use 25fps and not 30fps for TV, so was this recorded in "video" rate (25) or "film" rate (24fps)? Or has it been converted from 25->30, which would probably be a mistake? I saw a few episodes of this when it was running on the BBC HD channel and it was stunning, but I'm probably going to wait on this one...

We have to assume - and we all know what assumption is the parent of ? - the at least the US release will be /p24 or /i30 - since most US consumer displays don't have a chance of dealing with a refresh rate of 50Hz even if the players can...
