Although this three-volume set has been rumored for weeks now, this morning Warner officially announced 'That’s Entertainment: The Complete Collection' for release on both Blu-ray and HD DVD November 13.

I wonder if they'll be restoring all of the clips from each individual musical?

That would be nice, but I doubt it. There is a lot of blemishes on the SD versions in some songs, so if they don't clean them up a little it could look pretty bad.

I want this but I'll wait for a review first.

Just about to watch it now on BR. Will share thoughts on PQ/AQ later if anyone's interested.

I've been holding off from getting this until I read a review regarding the PQ.

Watched the first movie last night. It's pretty obvious that they have not cleaned up the individual clips. I'm sad to say that many of the sequences didn't look much better than SD on first pass. You can clearly still see lots of artifacts (pops, lines, etc) and some of the B&W clips even have a bit of a greenish tint.

My guess is they've tidied up a print of the entire That's Entertainment film rather than go back and fix the individual clips. It's a real shame as I was looking forward to seeing some old movies in HD that were on par with the HD discs for Casablanca, Robin Hood and Grand Prix.

For the most part, the colour clips look better than their B&W counterparts and there is some eye candy here and there. And watching the special features (which are all SD) you can see that the hi-def image is an improvement over the original SD material (some of the songs in the movie proper are shown in the extras).

Audio quality is OK. There is some use of the surrounds but it's nothing to brag about.

Having said all this, I loved the movie itself. It was my first experience seeing the film and I was blown away by the scale of most of these numbers. And the sheer quality of the songs and dance routines made me want to see these movies in full.

To sum it up, this is (for me) probably the most disappointing hi-def release I've bought this year. Turner had an opportunity to show us just how good old movies can look in hi-def and they blew it.

I really wondered how they were going to pull off this release with all the old material at the heart of it. Now I know--they didn't go the full mile apparently. I'm not surprised I guess, but a real dissapointment. I also wanted to get a glimpse of what the various "classic" movies were going to look like in hd. I doubt I'll bother with this release if there truly was nothing done to clean up the classic material.
what a waste.

lol. WOW!
so maybe this is da bomb after all.
sounds like they DID go the extra mile after all.
maybe the other poster was thrown off by the limited nature of this old material. That review obviously makes me much more interested in this piece. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.............
Anyway, thanks Arnie for posting the review.

I own it and like it alot.

Please expect blemishes, dirt, and grain on many of the older clips('10s-'50s films). It is not horrible, but if you are expecting it to be more than a notch over sd-dvd, you will be disappointed. They would have to go to original sources again and clean up and then put the movie back together again. Granted all three had an additional footage over an hour each and was well worth the +$70 to me. Others should not expect much improvement IMO.
