Another CES surprise:

Hopefully we'll get more details soon. But quite an exciting potential development in the format war!

Old news, TDK has already announced a prototype 100GB Blu-Ray disc a year ago (at CES 2006 to be exact) so BD still wins in terms of storage capacity

They still have to submit it to the DVD Forum for consideration and adoption. And there's that little problem of retro-compatibility.

OK this is ridiculous !!!!! Most BD supporters have mostly based the format war on the 20 extra gigs. Now your going with the "We Got 100 Anyay's". What are you 6?

To me this is excellent news. Very happy to hear it.

you could add a 20 to that six, thank you very much But still, this makes the gap even bigger from 60% (BD50 vs. HD DVD30) to a full 100% difference (BD100 vs. HD DVD50). Either way, there's also the problem of player compatibility as new players will most likely be needed to play either one anyway so I would not expect either version to be commercially available until at least midway into both format's lifespan when both higher capacity discs and players could be reliably mass produced

Do you know how much 100GB discs would cost? I would imagine it would be cheaper to have 2 50GB discs.

Also with this announcement I'm willing to bet you'll see HD DVD 50 much much sooner (if BD100 ever really even happens.)

Precisely what I was about to point out - hopefully a step in the right direction though.

I'm sure they'll have no problem getting it approved by the DVD Forum. The only thing to wonder about is compatibility with current players but I'm sure they must have thought of that.

Gotta be a firmware upgrade....right?

Considering that they're still having yield issues with BD50, the 100GB BD disc is nothing more than a pipe dream.

You know, I think this 50 GB disc is a hybrid of two HD DVD related triple layer technologies. One is the 3 15Gb layers and the other is the Hybrid 2 15Gb layers with one SD layer technology - I think they simply managed to put them together with 3 15Gb layers and 1 SD layer giving a total of approximately 50Gb.

A twist on that is that using this mechanism they could also create 35Gb discs which would certainly play in current players - ie. 2 15Gb layers and one SD layer interpreted mapped as one 35Gb storage capacity (nothing forces that 5Gb layer to be uses for SD purposes).

Thats good news to hear. Lets just hope more people buy into. It seems that so many people have thier heads up their asses, they act like they never loved regular dvd format, that it did them wrong or something. Well if they loved regular dvd why would they not love a better version of dvd which is hd dvd. if everyone is so convined that bd has more storage and is better technology then why does hd dvd so far seem to be matched equal if not better. I bet if sony came out with hd dvd it would all be good to you fanboys.
