Default Dawn of the Dead (2004) - High-Def Digest review

Kenneth's review of the 2004 'Dawn of the Dead' remake is up. Although he had mixed feelings about the film itself, he says this HD DVD is one of Universal's more solid catalog efforts, boasting a great video transfer, an impeccable TrueHD audio track, and all of the supplements from the previous Special Edition DVD.

Probably my favorite zombie film ever, picked it up when I got Heroes, and hoped for the best with picture and audio. I was just as impressed as Kenneth was. Hopefully this is a sign of things to come for Universal catalog titles as far as quality consistancy.

My wife and I love horror movies, and Zombie movies are our favorite of the horror catagory. For what ever reason the original Dawn of the Dead was soming I saw when I was under 10 years old (im 29 now) and has slipped under the rader ever since. I just always assumed I saw the original.

I have this on order and i should come soon, but I have to admit I am soooo looking forward to the 1978 BD version. It will be like watching it for the first time.

i actually enjoyed this better than romero's classic..not to say that it wasnt a classic,,just that i dont like pure horror..this seemed more lighthearted at times..and overall more fun.(like the Wheres waldo game, and the parady of down with the sickness)..but yea..just picked it up on amazon. cant wait to give it my own review.

Default Not worth 4 stars for PQ...

I received this disc last weekend and gave it a try on Sunday afternoon.

I've got a 43" Pioneer Plasma set that has been calibrated by an engineer from the Eurorean Imaging Science Foundation.

I've never really liked the look of this movie, but I like the movie itself. The colours have always seemed to be too pumped up for me and the graininess of the image always annoyed me.

The HDDVD DEFINATELY looks better than the standard def DVD but not dramatically so. The fine object detail is much better but the incredibly bright colours and distracting grain are also still present... I would give this 3 stars for PQ.

The sound is MUCH, MUCH better than the standard def DVD tho would've given it only 4 stars.

I really can't say enough good things about the TrueHD 5.1 surround mix (48kHz/16-bit/18 Mbps)

18 Mbps!!!!!!

is that supposed to be another number? that's like 5.1 24/192 pcm right there

I too prefer this to Romero's film as this one is better acted and less plastic-looking as well as scarier and more thrilling.
Still wouldn't get it on HD tho cos I've had the SD DVD for years and only double-dip for all-time favourites.

Love the film though I couldn’t disagree more about the quality of the transfer. Even at three stars they would have been forgiving. This is Big Fish all over again, plus a little extra grain to go along with the blown out colors.

Default Its not the complete unrated cut

Yes it has all the bits in the montage, but is still censored in one shot from the full unrated cut available outside the USA - the naked female full frontal through the windshield on the highway at the beginning has been obscured with digital blood.

Pity, as I hate any form of censorship, particularly as its marketed as the unrated cut directors cut.
