Default 'Renaissance' (German Import) - High-Def Digest Review

Kenneth's review of 'Renaissance' is up. He says that while this flick is undeniably a visual tour-de-force, he had a hard time investing himself in its overly-complicated and ultimately-dry storyline. As an HD DVD release, however, this one's a clear winner, boasting a great transfer and an above average lossless audio track. If can't wait for 'Renaissance' to be released here in the U.S., this HD DVD (available for worldwide shipping from Amazon.com) is certainly a suitable import.

I've never heard of "Ascot Elite" until now...

The film sounds interesting, so I did add it to my Blockbuster queue.
Interestingly enough, Blockbuster Online lists the following spec for this title.
Studio: Walt Disney Video

So unless Blockbuster online has erred, we may never see this title released in the US on HD DVD.

There's a typo in the review regarding the price/currency:
It's listed in 'Final thoughts' as having a price of £24.95 (24.95 UK pounds), while the actual price is €24.95 (24.95 €uro).
Also worth mentioning is that if ordered to anywhere outside the European Union they will deduct local sales tax, reducing it to €20.97 before shipping/€34.97 shipping included to the US (Amazon Germany and Amazon France are both very expensive for shipping single items, it's recommended to either use somewhere like Xploited for single items, or order several items at once).

I agree with the review, the picture and sound are top notch, but it can be difficult to watch at times...especially in a dark room. Pretty cool though.

About time. I did like the movie. The SinCity style is always welcome.

Why don't they even include the original French track? That's just senseless.

Yes, it is very interesting, the English language track is perfectly synched down to the movements of the mouth, so it is clear this is not an overdub. I assume that there must be 2 versions of the video, one synched to the French language and one synched to the German language. Luckily for us the German version includes the version synched to the English language.

I don't think there are two versions of the video. I think that the audience in France is just more tolerant of dubbing and less distracted by lip sync.

This is a really strange case. It's a French production shot using French actors (who were rotoscoped), but like many European productions it must have been made with an English speaking market in mind.

Added this to my pre-order from Germany yesterday, would have been a blind buy. I read the description of the movie and thought I would like it. I however didn't notice that it was animated or that it was B&W only (I know the cover is B&W and animated, but I just thought it was a nightime scene from the movie or something). Oddly I found a rip to watch and decided to preview it, normally I hate spoiling watching the movie in the best presentation possible, but "on the fence" blind buys I might do it.

Glad I watched it last night. When I realized it was B&W and all animated I almost immediatly cancelled my order, but I gave it a chance and sat through it. I honestly couldn't really get into the story at all and I personally hate watching B&W movies, they just don't appeal to me as much as I want them to (honestly I really try to make myself want to like B&W movies and sit through them even when I am nearly bored out of my mind). After watching it I cancelled my order for it this morning.

Situation sucks though, I try to read as little as possible when blind buying movies so that I don't spoil anything and also so that I don't have any pre-judgements on it before seeing it. I didn't research much on this title and would have really regreted blind buying this one, honestly I probably would have traded it or sold it after I'd seen it.

Interesting that you bumped this thread as I just placed an order for it from Amazon.de.

Although I'm dissappointed to read the poor reviews on the storyline, at least the PQ/AQ is top notch, as that's almost enough to justify an HD purchase.

Quick question.

Are the French/German imports the same?
