Default 'Full Metal Jacket: Deluxe Edition' -- pre-release buzz

Though it wasn't apart of their initial announcement of the high-def 'Kubrick Collection,' Warner is also re-issuing 'Full Metal Jacket' on October 23:

http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/fullmetaljacket_de.html

It's billed as a "Deluxe Edition," though there is no information on what, if any, the new extras will be. Or if the film has been truly remastered or otherwise upgraded.

Hopefully, though, given the "Deluxe Edition" tag, we'll get something new...

I put off buying this in hopes of a re-release. It was hard, but I'm so glad I did. I'll be all over this!

Unfortunately I bought this rather late in the game, so I am somewhat disappointed to see it come out in deluxe version so soon afterwards

However, releasing a newer and better version ain't all that bad...

Perhaps they will do a "Fifth Element" and replace the horrible original release... I have the Blu-Ray version and it has the worst picture I have yet seen on an HD format.

They already did reissue a remastered Fifth Edition on Blu-ray. You should be able to get your old copy replaced for free if desired.

I simply ordered the new remastered version since I was afraid it would take a long time to process the return.

However, I am not sure I like the new one better. It is definitely cleaner, "sharper" than the original release, whereas the original seemed to have better depth and 3D feel for me, despite obviously being dirtier and less sharp. I guess it feels like whatever process they used to clean it up, also took something away - the newer release just somehow feels flatter than the original, despite being obviously cleaner.

Wow, I've heard nothing but "like night and day" remarks. I think I keep the Superbit 2-disc set for now. Gotta watch the wallet.

I think he means he hopes Warner will do like Sony in the re-issue of The Fifth Element and offer an exchange program for Full Metal Jacket.

But, I doubt it. Sony didn't make any changes in the title for 5th Element. In fact, when shopping for the re-issued copy, you have to look at the back to make sure it says "Dolby TrueHD audio" to make sure you have the re-mastered version.

Warner calling this re-master the "Deluxe Edition" sounds like a double-dip to me. Fortunately, I Netflixed the "not-so-deluxe" version.

What I meant was that they should replace the "Full Metal Jacket" discs like the "Fifth Element" discs were replaced.

I have the new version of "The Fifth Element," but the HORRID original release of "Full Metal Jacket."

You're right. After re-reading his comment it does appear that he was hoping they would allow exchanges for the old version of Full Metal Jacket, referring to the process as a "Fifth Element". I should have read his comment more carefully.

I also agree that there is almost no possibility that they will have any exchange program for the standard vs "deluxe" edition HD DVD's...

Edit: Thanks for clearing that up IceNine and my apologies for misinterpretting your post.

Well, I suspect on many displays, the new one will probably look better. I have often noticed that my older CRT based 65" Mitsubishi brings out a lot of subtleties and depth which I don't see in my newer Plasma (though that one is only a 42" 720p plasma).

I actually have a lot of respect for my older Mitsubishi, I think the fact that there is very little processing to the image (it is all analog) means that I am getting a much better approximation of the source. I have considered rpelacing it many time with newer models, but I really don't see much improvement with the latest sets. I guess I will upgrade when there is something really tangible to be gained, such as 2160p (which will still be an upgrade for 1080p sources due to upscaling) - or when my set dies, of course.

Am I the only one who would find it interesting to hear (or even see) a commentary of the first part of the movie between R. Lee Ermey (GSgt Hartman) and Vincent D'onofrio (PVT Pyle?)

I'm glad to hear this...even though it is a double dip. I never bought the original due to the poor scores the PQ got....and I really love this movie. So, I'll be picking this one up immediately (assuming a new transfer).

I dunno if it'll be a new transfer or not. I'm assuming it will just actually have some extras, whereas the first release does not.

I do hope it has a new transfer though. I haven't purchased it yet and will definitely pick up the deluxe edition.

According to the following article it will be remastered: http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=65400

Warner Home Video have announced the US Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD release of several Stanley Kubrick titles on 23rd October 2007. Launching alongside the new Warner Home Video Director's Series: Stanley Kubrick Collection on DVD are High Definition versions of 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, The Shining and a new Deluxe Edition of Full Metal Jacket.

All titles have been restored and remastered and will offer both archive and new bonus features. Exact specs are to be confirmed, but initial details suggest all titles will use dual-layer BD50 and HD30 discs
