Default 'The Host' - High-Def Digest review

Just posted Kenneth's review of 'The Host.' He's a fan of the film and says this HD DVD release definitely delivers, boasting an excellent video transfer, and a strong (if incomplete) set of supplements. While audiophiles will be disappointed to learn that this HD DVD disc doesn't include the superior PCM track featured on its Blu-ray counterpart, taken on its own, Kenneth says the included DTS-HD track still ranks a solid four stars.

It's very good and if you like 'Shaun of the Dead' than I'd say you'll embrace this, another really good foreign horror release that has a sense of humor and is a good monster flick.

It's also got an almost perfect PQ rating so what's not to like?

Incidentally, 'Shaun of the Dead' is one of my favorite newer films.

The PQ of the HD-DVD was excellent and the monster looks amazing. The movie itself was kinda goofy the actors were very over done, but again this is a giant monster movie so take that with a grain of salt. It's worth seeing if for nothing else the great monster effects.

Hi the ratio of the movie seems to be wrong on the both hd-dvd and blu-ray reviews, it's an 1.85:1 movie

I never saw or heard of this movie either but im trying to control myself in buying too many HD movies....my parents are starting to get worried about me
so il probably pass on this one but the rating makes it very tempting to get.....il probably rent it when hd movies become available by my area...

Please note that there have been multiple reports of pauses/freezing on the HD DVD version of this movie. I have tried two separate discs and they both freeze at exactly the same points on my Toshiba HD-XA2 player with the latest firmware.

There have been reports of the disc working flawlessly on first-generation players.

Wanna get this one. Little bit concern about the freezing. Why does it say on the backcover region 1 ntsc? It is a hd dvd.

I'm very happy to see that the HD DVD release received such high marks in the High Def Digest review. Thanks for the great review Kenneth.

I've been anticipating this release for awhile now and it is at the top of my rental queue.

Weird. Shaun of the dead is absolutely nothing like the HOST. Not sure where you draw this connection.

Thanks for the confirmation. I also thought that the comparison was very strange, although I haven't seen either movie yet, so I couldn't refute it.

I was a bit let down by this film. Maybe it was just that the overwhelmingly positive buzz allowed me to get my hopes too high, but I found this film to be a good, but VERY FAR from great, horror film. If jaws is a 10, this is a 7 at best.

I agree that the PQ was good, and the extras look very worthwhile, but the film itself was not as good as I expected it to be.

Also, stop with the shaun of the dead comparisons-- While this film has jokes, it is nowhere near as comedic as Shaun, and drawing comparisons will only serve to mislead any potential viewers.

Maybe he meant to say the original Dawn Of The Dead?

That would make sense since it's basically social commentary ala DotD mixed with a monster movie.

Agreed.

I wasn't thrilled with the movie and didn't find it to be anywhere near as good as it is being billed to be.
