Default 'District B13' - High-Def Digest review

Just posted Kenneth's review of 'District B13.' Originally released on Blu-ray a few months back, the film makes its HD DVD debut in a slightly different configuration. Kenneth says
the VC-1 video encode on this one is quite impressive and slightly cleaner than the MPEG-2 Blu-ray edition. The audio packages are also very nice -- the only thing spoiling the fun here is a weak set of supplemental offerings.

Awesome.

I was waiting for a real Blu-ray/HD DVD comparison to decide which version to get (although I knew the VC-1 encode would normally be superior).

Will definitely pick this one up.

I think I am going to get this. Also see that it is highly rated on RottenTomatoes (along with "The Host", another that I think I am going to get).

This is one of the first reviews that I have seen where different format releases from the same publisher actually got different scores (Though I personally compared "Black Rain" side by side and the VC-1 version was clearly superior than the BD MPEG-2 version, even though it got the same score in the review). Good for HD DVD for getting the better score.

If listening to the original French-language soundtrack, both the HD DVD and the Blu-ray have only English captions for the hearing impaired, which spell out music and sound effects cues. Very annoying.

I've had this movie for about a month now and I have to agree the PQ is outstanding and the opening chase scene is equally outstanding. Fun movie if you're looking for some action. I don't regret this purchase.

My Netflix only has the Blu-ray version, which I rented a few weeks ago. I really liked it, and thought the video & audio were excellent. I've been looking to buy the HD DVD version, especially after this review favoring the VC-1 encode.

So, let me ask you this.....

What chase scene did you like better? The one at the beginning of Casino Royale or the one at the beginning of B13?

I haven't seen Casino Royale yet . . . .

Not at the top of my list.
