'Meet Joe Black' - High-Def Digest review
Just posted Kenneth's review of 'Meet Joe Black.' Although opinions differ on the film itself, Kenneth says the quality of this HD DVD is indisputable. Boasting a beautiful video presentation and a solid audio package, this is one Univeral catalogue title that delivers on the bottom line.

There is no act Universal must get together. It's all about the quality of the master, how well it was taken care of and the extent of damage.
As for Meet Joe Black, it looks real nice (4.5 is actually surprising!) and the source was obviously well taken care of. It looks like film from beginning to end, like what I saw in the theater. I couldn't be happier.

Movies are so rarely great art that if we cannot appreciate great trash.
we have very little reason to be interested in them.

Haven't seen this HD-DVD yet but I caught the hi-def version of "Meet Joe Black" last week on HDNet movies and the picture was jaw-dropping, the best quality I've ever seen for a movie on HD cable. Most likely will pick up this title eventually, as the reviewer says it tends to be on the long side time-wise but it struck all the right chords with me. Claire Forlani and Brad Pitt will never look this good again.

I finally got around to watching this, though I received it weeks ago. This title looks outstanding, especially considering its age and 3 hours length. Good job Universal.

Meet Joe Black
The visuals on this title are out of this world. The outdoor party at the end features some of the best HD stuff I've seen in any movie - period.
Great job by Universal on this one. -

Great review. And I agree, NOT for everyone or even maybe most people. But if it DOES click with you...

Either Tier 0 or 1 quality...
As I posted before in this thread I first saw this film in HD on cable and the picture was jaw-droppingly good. Now that I have seen it on HD-DVD I can confirm that the quality is equal or better than the HD broadcast.
It really takes a great transfer for me to sit up and take notice since I project onto a 120" screen using the Panasonic PT-AE900U with SmoothScreen technology. But the clarity and color saturation of this disc really showed through brilliantly making this a demo movie for friends and family. It is certainly worthy of being included on any Tier 0 or 1 listing for its visual impact. Since it is basically a talky film there is little to get excited about sound-wise, but still the music and dialog is executed nicely.
If you've never seen this film before just remember it's a romantic fantasy so if that's not your cup of tea then pass this one up.

The nighttime scenes near the end absolutely rocked the Kuro...the excellent contrast really shone through. Mixed feelings on the movie itself (too long!) but it was worth at least a solitary viewing, with some pretty impressive performances. Brad Pitt indeed came off as a quirky, unintentionally (or intentionally depending on your perspective) comical dimwit.
