Default Universal's Quality Control Is Strong

    Seabiscuit (Amazing!)
    King Kong (Reference Material)
Casino (Superb...the best this title has ever had)
    Backdraft (Fantastic!)
Fast and the Furious (plus the 2 sequels are top notch)
    2 Fast 2 Furious
Fast & the Furious Tokyo Drift
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (A big surprise)
    Jarhead
    The Bourne Supremacy
Spy Game (I thought this transfer was very good)
    The Hulk (Flawless)
Out of Sight (Probably my favorite Universal catalog so far. Just terrific)
    The Thing
    Jet li's Fearless
    Van Helsing
    Assault on Precinct 13
    The Mummy
    Serenity
    Dune
    Slither
    The Interpreter
    Brokeback Mountain
    The Sting
    The Mummy Returns
    The Deer Hunter
    Hollywoodland
    The Cronicles of Riddick
    Ray (Reference Material)
    Friday Night Lights
    Red Dragon
    Children of Men
    Smokin' Aces
The Nutty Professor (a big surprise on how good it looks)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    The Skeleton Key
Smokey and the Bandit (yes! I rank this as a very good transfer)
    The Frighteners
    Dragonheart
Sneakers (yes! I rank this as a decent transfer)
The Big Lebowski (Thought it looked terrific)

Universals PQ has for the most part has been Outstanding and the percentage of terrific transfers have been consistant. There may be a few mis-steps recently (the Game, The Jerk, Daylight). But for the most part they have been terrific. I am really tired of everybodys bitching and moaning. It has really become an over exagerated topic.

I was second guessing them after watching back-to-back Catalogs...two of my favorites too, THE GAME & LIAR LIAR. The ONLY HD DVD's that got a 7/10 rating.

After opening up and watching Sneakers, Midnight Run and this week's releases Mallrats, The Big Lebowski. I take it back, Universal is doing an amazing job!

I have absolutely no problem buying Universal releases. Rather I am grateful to them for making an effort to get so many decent titles out.

I bought the 2-disc SE of Backdraft before I bought my new player. The HD DVD is really that good? I love this film. Oh, thanks for not making this a smackdown.

It just went on my "to get" list, along with The Hulk. Replacing these films is getting expensive. Thanks.

Check out the review on this site. It is a near perfect rating for PQ by Peter B.

I do not always agree with Peter B. on some of his reviews. But he is right on with this one. It is just as close reference material you will get. All this talk about it, now I am in the mood to watch Backdraft again.

I sincerely disagree with some of the reviews of Universal's releases on this site. Take a look at Liar Liar, which has gotten a pretty nasty review on this site. It's not a bad transfer at all.

I agree that it's nice to have several opinions.
This site does seem to be pretty tough on reviews.
I almost didn't buy "Bruce Almighty" because of the reviews. But then I checked the forums and people said it's really pretty good. If you are a fan of a certain movie, chances are pretty good that you will be pleased with the quality upgrade to HD-DVD.

Absolutely, and that has been my experience overall with HD DVD and most more recent Blu-rays (not including some of the early BD releases where the transfer itself was obviously to blame - I don't mind grain, but I hate digital artifacts).

Some people just don't realize that not all cataloge movies will be 4/5 PQ or above. HDDVD or not. Plus, until now, universal didn't really have "waves" of older cataloge titles coming out, I think the recent 4 or 5 cataloge titles that looked average or slightly below as far as PQ goes got blown out of proportion. They still floor the SDDVDs.

And I agree, Smokey and the Bandit was just incredible, true demo material. And I was very happy with how sneakers looked, considering it wasn't remastered (but not all films get this expensive treatment).

I read on AVS Forums that someone already has "Dante's Peak" and they say it looks quite good. Universal has really been getting slammed lately, they are damned not matter what they do. I've really had no issues with anything they have done lately. "The War" is on its way to me and I should have it tomorrow. I'll post my thoughts on it, I really like the film and was pleased Universal decided to release it so soon. "The Bourne Identity", "Hot Fuzz" and "Shaun of the Dead" are coming! Universal rocks!
