Default German Discs Questions

Anyone have any of these?

Bali - 1000 Gesichter einer Insel [HD DVD]
Der Geist von Mae Nak [HD DVD]
Rides Vol. 1 / Episoden 01-04 (engl.) [HD DVD]
Rides Vol. 2 / Episoden 05-07 (engl.) [HD DVD]
Rides Vol. 3 / Episoden 08-10 (engl.) [HD DVD]

Interested to see if anyone has any thoughts on them (or any experience at all). I am in the process of ordering all 5 and was just curious (I am buying them anyway just curious as to what I am actually buying

I have this one but I can't play it on my A3. I'm waiting for my A20 to get fixed so I'm hoping it plays on that.

Not sure if u really want to order this, because it only contains
  • German dts-HD Master Audio 7.1
  • Thai dts 5.1
audio and except of German no other subtitles. PQ and AQ is quite okay, nothing impressive or extraordinary.

The Rides series looks very well on HD DVD, a friend of mine owns it. Haven't seen much of it, but the PQ seemed to be a little bit superior to the Discovery HD broadcast.

Don't really care about audio as I can put English subs on anything with titledrome (I probably own 30 hd dvds with no english anywhere near them)

Thanks for the input on rides. I was kinda curious about them and was hoping it wasn't going to be 3 discs like "MTV cribs"

"Ghost of Nae Mak" has been discussed before I know in some threads in this section somewhere
although I have no idea if it is the same transfer.
maybe in the main import thread.

Sounds pretty neat, very cool tool. I wouldn't guess you ever would do so, but just in case the dts-HD Master Audio lures you, tune in the Thai dts. The German voice actors doesn't really fit to the charakters and even more important, they filtered some background audio. The movie itself is pretty enjoyable if u like asian mystery/morror movies.

This won't played in my a35 either, so I guess problem with 3rd generation players.
But it played with my A20.

Overall excellent PQ and Interactivity. It is basically feel like a tour trip to Bali without actually getting there.

It seemed more like a ad from the Bali Travel Association than a documentary but overall I liked the disc. Has some good scenes in there but not something I will watch more than once or twice (unless someone wants to see it)

I couldn't get my copy to play for more than 5 minutes in my Onkyo, or for more than a minute in the XA2. It wouldn't load in either combo player, so while I know this is a touchy title, maybe I have a bad disc because I bought it used? It really bugs me that I can't play this (if it won't play completely, then it's like I don't really have it), did yours play all the way through or did you sample it? I'd hate to end up buying a new copy and have the same thing happen. Maybe this title is THE most troublesome HD DVD that exists.

My copy played all the way through with no problems at all. I believe I watched it on my A1 but I can try on the XA2, the A30, the 805 and teh LG BH-200 if you like to see how they handle it (obviously I am not going to watch it 5 more times but I can check it for you at least 20-30 minutes or so while I do something else

Thanks, I'll check mine on the A1 as well.

Edit: doesn't load on the A1 (which I expected) and played about 12 minutes on the A2 before giving the disc error '486c...'. I probably have a bad disc, but at the same time, this title is probably so fragile that just about any defect will ruin it.

I played it again this morning in the A2 and this time it played until the end (however, after initially rejecting it once again, 5 minutes from the point I left off last night). It's really a very interesting documentary that could have been twice as long as Bali has so much of interest to see and know about.

It's odd to have a disc fail at random points like this, but at least I got one player to play it, and now I don't have to worry about a replacement. I might check to see if setting my XA2 at 720p will help with the sensitivity issues (since this is a 720p encode), but I doubt it will help.
