Well Disney own the rights in a lot of territories but Edko, the Hong Kong distributor who put out the English subbed DVD's, have not released anything on either hi-def format yet.

I think there's only Edko and Mei-Ah, of the major players, who have yet to dip their toes in the water. I'm not getting my hopes up like as three of the other high profile distributors Deltamac, Mega Star and Universe all seem to have thrown their hat in with Blu-ray.

It's starting to look like if you love Asian movies, and only speak English, then you have to buy into Sony's monster.

Adding to "Titles Available for Order":

30 Days of Night (Germany - Concorde ; Sony) (2-Apr)
Amazon Germany $29.91 (€20.16)

I changed the alphabetical ordering so that now "numeric titles" such as 1408 and 30 Days of Night appear before "A" in the order. Previously I placed them place on spelling but it's easier this way.

My orders from Amazon Japan with the following new releases by Gaga have shipped today:

- Underworld (Theatrical cut, TrueHD)
- U-571 (TrueHD)
- Sahara (TrueHD)
- Die Blechtrommel (The Tin Drum) (DVD+HD DVD, no English audio/subs)

All of these have release date of 1st of February. I'll post some impressions as soon as I've received them and I've had time to check them out.

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll have to sell my copy and consider getting the BluRay

Also, it looks like the Spain release of The Last Legion at DVDGO isn't in stock yet? Are there any other Spain sites to order from?

PowerDVD actually gets frozen if I try it when PowerDVD is running. Then I tried the disc again in my standalone player (HD-XF2) and there it loads just fine and works OK.

This is the first disc that seems to have such problems in my PC drive. Anyway, I'm not going to do anything about it as I can still watch it on my HD-XF2 which is my main player anyway. It looks like this disc may be somehow problematic on LG drives in any case.

Xploited Cinema is expected to get "The Last Legion" in early February, as long as it has been released as planned. DVDGO has pretty expensive shipping so I wouldn't order from there myself. I don't know other Spanish online sources, but Xploited Cinema usually gets the Spanish exclusive releases as long as they are suitable for English speakers (audio or subtitles).

This kills me... The Tin Drum looks really good on the Critrion, I can't imagine it HD. These No English Subs releases are heartbreaking.

I was a bit surprised that they didn't have the Standard Edition in the B&M store. Checked HMV Japan for the DVD/HD DVD Twin Pack Standard Edition and it says: "Availability: Sold Out Limited Editions
We regret that we cannot accept orders for this limited item as the available quantity has now sold out".
The same message for the DVD only edition. So they're all limited? I thought it was just the 4-disc. Amazon Jp still have both in stock but who knows after that.

I dont thats its 100% true until somone tries. A retailer said yes and a blogger no. Not exactly a definitive answer either way.

of course it does really suck that there are NO English subs on many of the titles that are ALSO on Criterion, including
Ran
Army of Shadows
The 400 Blows
The Tin Drum
La Haine

but you know what..........
I just decided who cares. I mean I have the Criterion one's and if I just familiarize myself with those versions, I feel like I should still be able to enjoy these HD DVDs. In short, I'm ordering all of these titles eventually. I already got "The 400 Blows' and I definitely plan to get "The Tin Drum."
I mean how could anyone pass up ANY of these amazing films in HD? I know I can't. Anyway, that's my 2 cents on these releases.

btw: Kannisto--"Ran" needs the Criterion studio name added to it in the title list.

Yeah, I'm only about half way through updating the list with the distributor information. The last half or so of the list is not yet updated, including Ran. I'm always doing it when I have time

La Haine has English subs though, I have it (UK import but same as French disc). I received The Tin Drum yesterday, going to put up an impressions thread soon.

Some pics of The Tin Drum package, I don't have time to post the impressions thread yet as I have to go to work now.

This is actually a Cinefil Imagica release together with Gaga! They have a great Criterion-like catalogue of films. I believe this is the first HD release by them. I took a photo of my favorite pages in their DVD catalogue that was included in the package also (the last photo). I wish they'd release that Argento stuff on HD DVD also!

Cinefil Imagica's DVD homepage (Japanese text):

I notice that Hot Fuzz has been released by Studio Canal, and it's THX certified.

I wonder if this would be worth the buy?

It might be the same Universal transfer. In some European countries (and Australia) original Studio Canal titles are distributed Universal though it's SC's original disc content. Mr. Bean's Holiday was a Studio Canal title in France but Universal title in various other European countries. I assume they may be the same exact Universal transfer as Universal and SC seem to have close co-operation. Also Smokin' Aces seems to be distributed by Studio Canal in France. The original Universal transfer of Hot Fuzz was so good in PQ already that it's probably no problem to get THX certification for that one.

Keitai Keiji the Movie 2 will be coming out in Japan on HD DVD on 21st of March:

http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/do...0201/happi.htm

Exclusively on HD DVD when it comes to High-Def.

Again it's only included as a "special feature" on initial printing of a DVD release.
