Default Equilibrium (Japanese Import)

I guess it really has been a while since I've seen Equilibrium, or as the Japanese call it, "Rebellion". I do have the SD version, but that's the SD version, so that doesn't count.

Again, 99% of you know what Equilibrium is about, so I won't bore you with useless details. You want to hear about the Import's quality, right? Right.

This was my third Christian Bale flick this week, that followed The Dark Night and The Machinist.

Let's start with the audio. It features a very cool DD+ soundtrack, and when the bullets start flying, you'll start ducking. It was very impressive. I'd almost forgotten what the film was about, but it quickly pulled me in. All of the action scenes kick ass, and the moments of stillness, including the Mozart "awakening" really hit home. I'll give the sound a 4.5, near reference.

The PQ, gets a 4, because of it's color palette. Most of the colors are very subdued, and the sun rarely shines. I will give props to the flesh tones. When people start to sweat, bleed, blush/flush, the detail is incredible. When the palette returns to its dark/grey/dank roots, it doesn't really standout. Bale looks like a sculpture sometimes, well, because that's the idea. Is that conflicting?

When comparing this to The Machinist, my ratings are in reverse. I gave The Machinist a 4.5 for PQ, and a 4 for sound. I give Equilibrium a 4 for PQ and a 4.5 for sound.

Both titles are rare and somewhat expensive. If you can get them from the same seller, don't be afraid to negotiate, or cut a deal of some kind. I think they're very worth it!

I also own the SD version of Equilibrium, can't seem to find it at a reasonable price on HD DVD.

The movie is not as well known as other similar movies of this genre, but it should be. It has a great story, ambiance, and at times great acting performances. The best way of describing it is that its a mix between Matrix and V for Vendetta.

I highly recommend this movie, especially if you can get your hands on the very rare HD DVD version.
