Default Out of Time (Japan - Toshiba Ent.) impressions and pics

I think this title hasn't been reviewed much so I figured I'd create an impressions thread on it. It's nowadays pretty hard to find already, online shops seem to have run out of stock and it's out of print.

I bought mine many months ago but I just watched it last night.

Case pics:

Specs:
Video: MPEG4/AVC 1080p 2.35:1 average/target bitrate: 23.000 Mbps
Audio: English DTS-HD 2046 Kbps (16bit) and Japanese DD+ 2046 Kbps (16bit)
Subtitles: Optional Japanese
Extras in SD resolution:
- Making of and interviews: Out of Time: Crime Scene
- Character profiles
- Screen test (5 scenes with 2 of the actors)
- NG cuts (failed scenes)
- Photo Gallery
- Original trailer

Disc is HD-30, with image size 20.4 GB (22 000 762 880 bytes).

I'll post some screencaps and my impressions in separate posts in this thread soon.

PQ and AQ:
The movie looked pretty sharp to me, the level of detail was pretty consistent and good. There was a moderate amount of grain present pretty much all the time. The colors were a bit warm at times. I'd give it about 4+ for PQ.

AQ sounded very good on my limited system, 4+ for AQ as well based on 1.5 Mbps DTS output through optical.

The movie itself:
IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0313443/
Plot summary from IMDB (it may contain some partial spoilers):
Quote:
Matt Whitlock is the Chief of Police in a small town outside of Miami, Florida, living and working in a place that is normally reserved for those who have retired and spend the rest of their days relaxing in the sun. Although he enjoys his job, his drinking whilst on duty is an obvious flaw in his character, brought about in ways by his recent divorce from wife Alex. Whitlock is currently having an affair with a local resident, Ann Merai Harrison, whose abusive husband Chris has driven her to adultery. Recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, Ann Merai plans on rewarding Whitlock's loyalty to her with a handsome payout from her life insurance. After an apparent arson attack on their house kills Ann Merai and Chris, Alex arrives back on the scene as the detective in charge of the case - and Whitlock soon finds himself the prime suspect... I found the movie to be very entertaining, it kept a good pace with a high level of tension regarding how Denzel's character can get through the hurdles. There was also a good amount of humor in the movie and the main characters all gave pretty good performances. Florida environment also brought a lot of color to the movie. It was a pleasant surprise as I wasn't expecting that much from the movie and it was certainly better than I thought it would be. It's nothing groundbreaking but it was still very good entertainment. Recommended if you can still find it from somewhere

I enjoyed this very much too, the tension pretty much never lets up. I was very impressed with the PQ and I'd give it a 4.5 and the same for the audio (although I really can't turn it up that loud because of the neighbors in my apartment). PQ is very sharp and the scenery and abundance of daylight scenes made it a visual treat for me. I really didn't notice much grain except a little in the few darker scenes.

I asked Tony to see if he could bring some copies in for stock and he said he'd look into it. He's pretty good at tracking stuff down, so if anyone wants it, send him a message to see if he can special order it and maybe he can find it.

Kannisto had an extra copy which he kindly sold me a month or two ago. Tony said he has special ordered it in the past though. Considered that it's a pretty good action/thriller type of movie, I'm surprised it slipped through the cracks and he never stocked it.

This one is not too hard to find in Japanese B&M stores that sell HD DVDs yet so your friend should hopefully be able to find it. E.g. these stores have typically a reasonable HD DVD selection in Tokyo area: Bic Camera, Yodobashi Camera, Sofmap, Ishimaru. There are many such stores e.g. in Akihabara area.

She is supposed to be around the Tokyo Airport area (I think) and the name Akihabara sounds very familiar. Would be cool if she can find this for me at a decent price. BTW do you know how many of the Twin disc "virtual trip" discs there were roughly? Also have you ever actually watched one? been thinking about picking up a few of them since nobody seems to have them and I am a sucker for watching pretty things waving in the wind...

If that's the international Tokyo Airport (Narita) area, it might be difficult to find any HD DVDs there. It's about 60 km from central Tokyo and there aren't too many shops there. The domestic airport at Haneda is close and well connected to Shinagawa which is about 15 minutes from Akihabara by a local train.

There are 16 Virtual Trip discs according to this HD DVD list that is or was maintained by Toshiba:
http://www.hddvd-toshiba.jp/hdd-dvd/...ist/index.html

There are also a couple of others that are very similar to Virtual Trip discs but not labeled as Virtual Trip discs. I have one that is similar to those discs, "The Four Seasons of Kyoto". The English language support on those discs is good, they are fully bilingual and the PQ is very good based on my disc and the imagery is beatiful. They are a bit pricey though with MRSP at 5040 yen for each and the content runtime is typically about 1 hour on each disc.

Interesting in that among the first HD DVD discs ever released were twin discs. Nice to know that the Virtual Trip HD DVDs are English friendly, and even though they don't offer the bang for the buck, I think I'll add a few to my collection, particularly one of the early ones.

Depends on the stores, last time I saw 2 new ones for 4030 yen each, that's 20% off from the MRSP (5040 yen). There haven't been much in the way of firesales here. I'll look into buying a couple them at the best price I can find. Can't buy too many though and each B&M store usually has only 1 or 2 if they have any so the prices may vary.

I already bought 2 used flawless ones for 2 people yesterday, they had asked me by PMs earlier. The used ones are already out in the store I tend to
find best prices at and other stores I know of charge too much for used discs.
