Nice, I'm a sucker for great packaging and since this is a different encode than the US release (and very likely superior), I'll definitely have to get this.

Ok Jester.. When are you gonna sell me this one?

Do you have a direct link? I can't seem to find it on their site, hopefully it's not sold out.

Technically it's a DVD release with an HD DVD as an extra. But for people like us it's an HD DVD release with extra DVDs

It's cheapest at HMV Japan, IF you buy another movie to go along with it (multibuy discount). Also shipping is about 1/2 the price of Amazon.jp.

Nice, I was just looking at Yesasia's pricing and it was quite expensive there. Taking a quite look through HMV and see a couple things I'm considering. Have to be careful not to go overboard

HMV is by far the best place to get Japanese titles in my opinion. I've purchased over 50 HD DVDs from them and use them almost exclusively (although I only have a few left to buy).

Thanks again bruce for pointing me to HMV, although my wallet hates it now. The packaging is truly spectacular for an optical media release. I work in the print and manufacturing industry and even I'm impressed by all the varietyand the production details that went into each piece. This is a keeper and I also highly recommend it for anime fans and if you don't mind spending your hard earned money. Oh yeah, the movie isn't bad either...

Yeah it's tough to beat the packaging for this title. Pans Labyrinth HD DVD had the #1 spot but this one just blew it away, no contest. I'll tell you what, if there's an earthquake and the worst happens, if there's any discs that don't get broken, it'll be these. Tough to beat a double set of heavy stock cardboard sleeves (and a plastic one to slip over those). Plus the stuff inside is top notch quality. Finally the transfer is slightly superior to the WB version (of course, no surprise there). What's sad is that the Wings of Hommenaise and Patlabor titles are similarly priced and their packaging pales by comparison, but that's Bandai Visual for you.

I was and to a certain extent, still tempted to get the French release for Pan's Labyrinth. But not having english subs kills it a bit for me. I might splurge on it eventually.

The slipcase and the small angle box that houses all the books and discs is heavy duty. I helped to manufacture 1500 of these type of boxes (a bit larger) for a client of mine and they weren't cheap. Granted, there is probably more than 1500 of these out there so the unit cost for these will be lower. If they had most of the print manufacturing done in Japan, then it actually quite expensive.

WB's release had a decent DD track, unfortunately I wasn't able to crank up the volume for the HD DVD release and see how much better the TrueHD track is. I can't remember if the PQ was better for the HD DVD version, it's been awhile since I first saw the WB's version.
