Default Resident Evil (Japan release) impressions

I received Resident Evil (Japan release) today. Amazon Japan only shipped my copy this morning and I expected it to arrive tomorrow but it already arrived today (and I don't even have Amazon Prime).

Pics:

Audio: DTS-HD 5.1 English, DTS-HD 5.1 Japanese, DD+ 2.0 commentary track
Subtitles: Optional Japanese, 2 types + commentary subtitles

Extras: 87 minutes (some in HD, some in SD), including: Making of, Marilyn Manson interview regarding soundtrack, design documentaries, zombie makeup documentary, Milla screentest, interviews, trailers, history of Biohazard the game, music video by Slipknot, commentary track by Milla Jovovich, Paul W.S. Anderson, Michelle Rodriquez, Jeremy Bolt

I will watch it tonight and post more impressions afterwards!

Ah, crap. I just looked on the front cover of your image, and it shows "Constantin Film", which is the German company that released RE and RE2 in Germany.

Hopefully they actually encoded this one correctly, because I may rebuy it.

I finished watching it and I think it looked very good, the scenes in good "laboratory light" look excellent. Darker scenes look medium grainy and not always tack sharp, but I think the grain is part of the source material and this transfer looks just right - no artifacts and no noticeable filtering that would remove grain and detail. The sound made a big impression as well, very immersive surround effects and strong LFE.

I don't have the German release so I can't compare to it but I would guess this looks better

I'm now watching the extras and at least the first two interview extras (Paul W.S. Anderson's interview and Milla Jovovich' interview for promotion of the movie in Japan the year it came out) are actually in HD and look very good. *The Making of" is in a smaller window and looks more like SD though some parts of it look quite HD'ish. The making of has actually English subtitles when there is some Japanese dialogue. Japanese subs are fully optional for extras as well (at least in the parts I've seen so far).

Constantin is one of the production companies of the film, the end credits mention them in many place.

Showgate (formerly Toshiba Entertainment) released this, the same studio behind the Japanese Equilibrium, Band of Brothers, and xXx HD DVDs .

So is this one VC-1? I kinda wish someone that saw both could let us know if there's a noticeable difference between the two.

I'm just saying, the source material could've been from Germany. I saw Constantin and said, "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

It's MPEG-4 AVC.

It's MPEG4/AVC, not VC-1. Probably not many have seen both yet as this was just released in Japan today. I can't imagine this version would get so bad feedback as the German version has received though as this looks very solid.

Could you take some pics of some scenes, so those of us with the German imports can compare?

Thanks I wasn't familiar with what AVC was. So technically it should be better since MPEG4 > MPEG2 right?

AVC and VC-1 use different compression tools, but the results are generally pretty similar.
