I just can't understand why most HD DVD import's, aside from the Studio Canal releases, seem to lack Lossless audio. With Japanese HD DVD's it seems NONE of them sport Lossless, at least the exclusive stuff, to that market I mean.

There are a couple of Japan exclusive HD DVD releases that have lossless audio: Patlabor (PCM and TrueHD), Patlabor 2 (PCM and TrueHD) and Naqoyqatsi (PCM).

I think lossless audio is more important from marketing point of view in some markets than in others. Even the big Hollywood studios (Warner, Universal, Paramount) are only now starting to use it more constantly.

As for Japan, most consumers in cities don't typically have big home cinema setups as they live in space restricted apartments and audio volume has to be kept in check due to neighbors etc. Lossless audio hasn't really caught on big time as a marketing tool here as far as I can see. Most consumers here wouldn't really get any major benefit from it. I think this may be one reason why there is not so much focus on lossless audio in Japanese releases.

Ok understood. However what about the Gaijin like me who are interested in getting it in Anime or other Japanese film's, perhaps Horror. I mean I hope when "Fate Stay/Night" FINALLY hits HD disc media it will be with a Lossless track. Btw I would buy it on the spot if Geneon released it on HD so STOP being idiot's Geneon!

Ugh... can't stand those UK HD DVD cases. Not to mention the huge, ugly ratings they use.

I think it's just in a theatrical run in U.S. since 10th of August, so no high-def announcements there yet.

According to IMBD, U.S. distribution is handled by "Miramax Films (2007) (USA) (theatrical)". It also says that U.K. distribution is "Buena Vista International (2007) (UK) (theatrical)".

However, the UK HD DVD release seems to be a "BBC Films" and "2 Entertain" release. I'm not sure who exactly would have the high-def disc distribution rights in the U.S. If Miramax, I guess it could be released on BD only.

I wish they would use thin cases everywhere, I don't like the DVD-thick ones they typically use in U.K. and some other markets as well. They consume too much storage space and don't look as nice.

I don't particularly mind the ratings labels.

I watched the movie with my wife last night. Storywise it was quite good overall and PQ/AQ was fine/normal throughout.

PQ was very solid and clean and there was hardly any grain even in the darker scenes. Level of sharpness and detail was constantly very good. It seems they used a rather narrow depth of field in many shots, so often only very narrow areas were in sharp focus. The color palette was a bit restrained.

Audio was quite much dialogue driven with a bit of music here and there, not much surround use or audio effects, kind of difficult to evaluate. I didn't notice any problems with it though.

All the extras seem to be in SD resolution, probably just ported from the DVD release as such.

Overall a good disc, no regrets about purchasing it at all

Is this case not the same size as the HD DVD cases in the US? It looks small, but I can't really tell how thick it is.
