Default Samsung BD-UP5000 (Refurbished) $250

Is it worth trying a refurb?

Thats a tough call. After shipping and taxes you're looking at $300 for an old model that has had some serious issues. I've come close to buying one several times, then reread the reviews and problems people have had. I wanted it mostly for the Reon HQV chip, but there are other players with that same chip now. If you want to play both formats, pick up an LG dual player to put in your PC. I went that route and have got nothing but praise for it. I think it only cost like $120 at FS. Then run HDMI from your video card out to your TV HDMI input.

Wouldn't be cheaper to buy stand alone HD DVD & BD players and get better quality???

My HD-A2 was a refurb and it still runs like a top. Don't be scared of a refurb, but do your homework on the model. The other option is you could go to an external drive for your laptop. (assuming you would be satisfied with it as a player.)

rather have a standalone player though thats why i was looking at the samsung bd-up5000..cause its a combo..but maybe i should pickup a cheap hd-dvd player that does full 1080p, and get a blu-ray player after.

^At this point in HD DVD's postmortem status, that sounds like the best idea.

Are people still getting anything from selling these units "as is" ? Like if the laser in yours died, and you wanted to sell it off to someone who was willing to buy a new laser for it or something...

Well, as much as I love my Samsung, I have two of them, I still decided to go ahead and build a HTPC with a combo drive. Engadget just posted "How To" for under a $1000 and also what you could substitute to get it to $500. Not saying you shouldn't buy a Samsung, but of my two, one is started to give me sound problems, i.e. after about 40 minutes, the sound starts getting garbled. Anywho, I guess it comes down to how many movies you have an dwhether it's worth having two seperate players. I have close to 100 HD-DVD's and do not feel like rebuying them on Blu Ray, hence the PC build. But as previously stated, $300 for a combo is a bit much. Hope this helps.

I've seen as is units sell for as much as $100 shipped.

I have the BD-UP5000 and think having separate players is a better option unless there can only be one player for some reason, then I would say it should work alright for you. Performance is actually very good for all three formats but there are some well documented shortcomings.

Basically it boils down to "WHEN it works, it works GREAT"
