Default The 24p update for HD-DVD Toshiba

The 24p for our platinums HD-DVD Toshiba translation via Babel Fish

Wednesday May 9
By Richard CZAPLA

All the owners of reader HD-DVD awaited it, it arrives finally, the update allowing platinums of living room to leave a signal in 24p.

For recall, the films in HD-DVD as well as in Blu-Ray are encodés of 24 images per seconds (24p) but leave the readers into 60 Hz for a question of posting of the no-claims bonus (which them are in 60 Hz). The fact of posting of the 24 images per seconds in 60 Hz causes what one calls an effect of judder which makes the fluidity much worse than of the Stake or the original 24p.

The update should be available towards the end of this month, for the happiness of all the compatible owners of diffusers 24p which will benefit then from a perfect marriage.

Yeah.

Actually I did better following the link and reading it in French - and I don't speak French.

But what model player (platinums) is it talking about? It has to be only the XA2 and A2-20, the only two players that output in 1080p.

Will this update also include the A20?

As I very was very astonished by this information, I asked for confirmation to person in charge HD DVD Européen at Toshiba (Olivier Van Wynendaele).

Here what it confirmed to me today: the support of the exit 24p is well planned for the XE1 via an update of the firmware for the end of September. The advanced interactivity is not really a problem for an exit 24p.

Go, in gift, with the agreement of Toshiba, planning concerning the updates to come here for the XE1:
- at the end of May, new firmware which will improve the compatibility of titles HD DVD with the turntable
- at the end of June, new firmware which will bring the functionalities networks (for connected titles HD DVD)
- at the end of September, firmware which will bring the 24p and High Bitrate Audio (transmission of compressed flows of the advanced audio codecs in HDMI 1.3 for an external decoding in the amplifiers of new generation
)

I recommend to you to pay attention to (distort) information which circulates so quickly on the fabric...

It looks like it's been finally announced (without a translation at least). Toshiba, via firmware upgrade will allow the XA2 and A20 to output in 24p.

Like it was mentioned above, September appears to be the date.

I suppose the Xbox 360 add-on will not be receiving this feature?

Announcement
By Henning Molbaek
FIRST PUBLISHED Jul 2, 2007
Coming in early September, Toshiba will add an enhanced performance function to its HD-XA2 and HD-A20 HD DVD players by offering the capability for users to update the firmware of their players allowing playback of film content in 1080p/24 frames per second, or 24p. Movie films are traditionally captured at 24 frames per second and Toshiba's HD DVD players will be able to maintain this frame rate allowing consumers to enjoy movies in their native form.

No doubt great news for the serious home-theater owners out there.

Honestly, this development is irrelevant. 24p is a buzzword, and thats it. Any TV that has a 24p compatible refresh rate will perform inverse pulldown (3:3 for 72Hz, 4:4 for 96Hz, 5:5 for 120Hz, etc...) from a 1080i/60 or 1080p/60 source. As such, all of these transport mechanisms will provide the same sequence of images since they contain all of the information from every frame.

Let me ask you this. If your TV supports 120hz would it be better to set the players output to 24 or leave it at 60? Or does it even matter?

Well, the 60Hz output from a player should still be flagged as film, so as long as your TV knows what to do with this, it won't matter if you feed it 60Hz or 24Hz. Now this all depends on your TV, and I imagine some of the early 24fps compatible TVs may not perform the pulldown correctly when given a 60Hz signal. In this case you would see a benefit. However, AFAIK virtually all 24fps compatible TVs will properly process a film flagged source. It's the same thing with 1080i/60 vs 1080p/60 on a 1080p set. Some early models couldn't properly deinterlace 1080i (on the other hand, many 1080p sets weren't capable of accepting a 1080p signal) but the vast majority do, and virtually all models on sale now do.

I'm lost. Why or is this that important? Can some kind person explain to me what this means? 24p or 30p. I'm well aware of fps but I'm unclear as to how this affects my viewing of HD content. HD-DVD to be more exact.
